Having worked in higher education across four continents, I have realized that mentorship programs are overrated. They're what institutions use to tick boxes that they're committed to upskilling and staff retention. What worked for me is having a sponsor - an individual who mentions your name when you're not there. I had the privilege of having such a person during my stint in Asia, my international profile in my research area grew because this person mentioned my research profile to the right people in the right places. But this will not happen in hyper competitive research cultures where everyone is viewed as a rival.

Mentorship programs are a win-win for faculty development! Pairing experienced educators with newer faculty creates a symbiotic relationship where skills are shared and perspectives are broadened. Mentors offer guidance on teaching techniques and research methodologies, while mentees bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm. This exchange enhances teaching and research skills while building meaningful connections and strengthening our institutional community.

In the past 5 years, I have taken more than 30 online courses on teaching and research through FutureLearn, Coursera, and EdX. But here's the catch; I paid out of my own pocket for all these online courses. An organization that is serious about growth should set aside funds to support its staff CPD. But this requires an understanding that the internal CPD programs are often too generic to be helpful.

This leads to a more diverse and up-to-date curriculum for students, elevating the institution's academic excellence.

One thing I have found very different bewteen UK compared to South African institutions, the latter actively support the CPD of their staff.

Not only in-house training, but giving faculty members the time and resources to attend, integrate, and implement these trainings. I have seen many faculty attend training and heard that while they are interested in integrating teaching, learning, and research practices, they need more time and resources for this to be feasible. Having staff members who can consult and support faculty one-on-one goes a long way in providing this support.

In-house training sessions offer a targeted and effective approach to faculty development, allowing us to address specific needs and goals. By bringing in experts to lead seminars on topics like classroom management, technology integration, and advanced research techniques, we can also provide a personalized and relevant learning experience. This dedicated time for professional development demonstrates the working institution's commitment to continuous learning and improvement, empowering faculty to excel and drive academic excellence.

Collaborating with someone outside your area of expertise doesn't guarantee that you will gain new technical expertise or subject mastery. Exposure doesn't mean skill or knowledge acquisition. There are a set of things that you need to do for exposure to translate to broadening your expertise. I have found taking the step to understand the language of my collaborator is important. This often means reading their previous work and reading more on their area of expertise. I don't want my ignorance to be a stumbling block to the project's progress. You will need to visit the collaborator and work with them. In the end, you'll have hands on experience.

Faculty can enhance teaching and research skills through reflective journals, teaching portfolios, and workshops: 1. Reflective Journals: Document and review teaching experiences, challenges, and insights to identify patterns and prompt adjustments, deepening educational philosophy and adapting practices. 2. Teaching Portfolios: Include lesson plans, student feedback, and self-reflections to track development, refine educational philosophy, and adapt methods based on comprehensive records. 3. Workshops: Organize on reflective techniques like action research and self-assessment to integrate reflection into routines and explore new strategies.

Indeed reflective practice is one of the best ways to generate knowledge and share with. Both practical skills and knowledge enhancements requires such a professional learning.
