I have found helpful when the students get to experience the art by either recreating it, or visiting a museum, and that’s only possible when the curriculum offers certain flexibility. A strict curriculum only allows for specific instructions without leaving the classroom.

Art should be introduced from K to graduation from high school. The exposure can be coloring in different mediums like crayons, finger paints and even markers. Let them color outside the lines, the art sessions for the younger students should be somewhat structured but not over supervised. Also introduce fiber art as many parents may knit or crochet and this reinforces what they see in the home. The fiber art could be making bracelets, braiding belts etc In older students, art can introduced by introducing them to local art, field trip to an art center, let them try pottery, weaving, painting not from their teachers but the artists themselves. When you open their eyes, their world expands.

One of my biggest problems at the moment is finding staff that knows how to use their hands. Art teaches all kinds of motor skills. It teaches problem solving, cause and effect, how to story boarding ideas, how to observe. I have never seen such disabled young people before. They struggle to use a pen or pencil or a knife. You may think I'm exaggerating but I'm not. I am having to show my new trainees how to do the most basic things. Even such things as observing something from a distance and evaluating what they are seeing. This is what has happened when the experience of life is constrained by cell phones.
