Actually do agree with this for sure. As a South African and raised in a melting pots of diversity. Growing up in a community that fostered inclusivity, I naturally found it easier to create such spaces as a leader.

Having a versatile team is a blessing as the beauty lies in the different thought processes each team mate possesses. The differences surely would be there as each one has a separate skill set, a different journey, a different outlook. A good team leader is one who appreciates the good in their team and takes them forward to achieve the common interest.

Diversity in a team or an organization is critical to growth, innovation and development. With the world as a global village, it has become imperative to involve cultural sensitivity, inclusion and diversity in all aspects of programming, development and management. Diversity and inclusion improve the quality of our ideas as professionals and innovators. We can embrace our differences and foster diversity by educating ourselves on our biases, promote open conversations that allows learning and improves tolerance. We can also be diversity and culturally aware when employing, creating teams and in our policies.

As a language teacher, I have practiced that in many years. Last year I got hold of my Indian attire, while I'm a Swazi. That drew a lot of questions for me as I was well known for dressing in my swazi attire all the time. Although that opened a huge space for my Indian students to share more cultural insights from India as a class, hence enriching our curriculum.

Totally agree with this POV. As an African and a boy from an humble background, I’ve been privileged to enjoy the embrace of different perspectives. I’ve had the chance to grace stages where I’d never dream of gracing in years because some persons decided everyone deserves a chance; a voice.

An example is understanding who you are working with and what the different cultures and religions are all about. When you have the opportunity to engage in 121's enquire how you can best support them. We have Muslims who requested off days for particular dates. We had all together to discuss that we have capacity to support but would need a rotation for example. Like the Christians that requested as well. We gave the power to the respective groups on how to accommodate everyone and ensure the workload is attended to. They agreed on a balance of rotation so everyone could plan better and have the special day dedicated to their beliefs.

I recommend that inclusive policies should also be regularly reviewed and updated to address any emerging issues and ensure continuous improvement. This proactive approach demonstrates a genuine commitment to creating a truly inclusive workplace.

So true. I am working for an organisation that doesn't believe in hiring females and that has gone a very long way in terms of the inclusivity in the school. Females are always sidelined whilst they have a huge role to play in terms of acculturating the learners.

Absolutely wonderful to implement tye awareness from the start. Understanding what everyone's thought processes are about these topics are vital. When we know better we do better.

Encourage open and honest communication and create a safe space where employees can discuss respectfully between each other and yourself. Ensure that you are not just going to your "go to people" to get the jobs done ensure that you give the opportunity to others who may not be the first thought or are quiet and shy to ask to step up. I like to ensure that I train every single person that works for me to do my job and all jobs so that everyone feels that they are included and treated equally and fairly plus it also fosters healthy competition and ensures that you build a succession funnel so that there are future leaders constantly ready to go.

Wooooooow, I'm yet to embark on that. I do have a platform where I normally share my insights on inclusion and diversity, only it has not yet been followed enough to capture many different views.

One thing I found helpful, is just have a chat first with the group you want to work with. Find out what their perceptions and expectations are. Sometimes people don't realise the unconscious biases that exist and that this in itself are the barriers to diversity and inclusivity. Create the platform where you can highlight that each one there, actually has 1 goal that they share and they are the keys to unlocking the potential for the innovation needed. Perhaps post this discussion, invite them to volunteer together at a local NGO or school. Being out of the work environment and with no titles, yet they all working on same goal. They see how well they do together and will be more motivated and inspired to contribute towards innovation.

I will also like to point out DIVERSITY METRICS: Leaders are to be held accountable for diversity and inclusion outcomes by integrating diversity metrics into their performance evaluations and setting clear expectations for progress. Track and analyze these metrics to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, establish partnerships with external organizations that focus on diversity and inclusion to learn and implement best practices. For example, a company might collaborate with a nonprofit that promotes workplace equality to develop tailored training programs and inclusion strategies, then regularly review leadership performance against these metrics to ensure continuous improvement and commitment to diversity goals.

One thing I would like to contribute is that leaders should learn how to ask questions. Rather than assuming, always ask questions about cultures you don’t understand. This will allow you to make litter to no offensive statements and also help present as a leader who’s passionate about the team’s welfare. This fosters more collaboration and makes discussions more inclusive as your team members will be more relaxed and will foster better collaborations.

One of the thing that I see in a lot of organizations which hurts diversity is lack of inclusion based on either hierarchy, gender or race. You see an email and you know someone should be included on that email regardless of gender, hierarchy or race but you know that person is knowledgeable on that matter and can handle that task well. This is the time to speak up. It only take that one person to ask that question why isn’t so and so included on this?! Just because the management did not involved that person doesn’t mean they are correct for doing that! I am pretty sure we had experience a moment where we are wondering why the expert on that matter wasn’t included! Speak up to have inclusion.
