Here's how you can identify if a Field Service Engineer is struggling to maintain work-life balance.

The real work is at home, and working offshore/onshore is vacations. That's what I spud in my head, to balance life and make me happy all the time. How about you?

overworking themselves. being field service engineer, it incolves a lot of driving/moving around which itself it also take a toll on one's body. somtimes you find them working after hours just to cover up for the work that is behind. Filed calls can also be overwhelming if they arent attended timeousley and throughly. so it is important to be able to manage the field calls and attend to them and be able to send the report intime. So it is important to plan the work and leave some time to rest inbetween and taking of breaks so the body and mind can recover & so you can be at your best perfomance.

The work life balance is fine in my experience because I really enjoy working as a field service engineer and therefore it is more life/life for me than life/work - it can definitely put a lot of strain on your relationships though, especially if you are working away a lot and leaving your wife with to cope with the kids - It really depends on how your other half feels about it though, it’s not as bad as being in the Army and sent away for 6+ months at a time!

Work-Life balance. thats other one item that its very challenging to many of the field engineer and they are unaware of it, until its a norm for them to take work home and finish it there over the weekend. most of the time they get to withdrawn in many of the things they use to do with the family and friends or time to themselves. in their office space they get to me a limited, they hardly available on team building sessions or dissoriented on the meeting. its very important to still nature your hobbies when there is ample time to sapre during off office hours .

I struggled with a number of this unitl i have to develop a stratergy that i have to have days in a week reserved for certain tasks and calls need to be arranged and planned, though its not a smooth ride always but it really ease the job and relive the pressure with ample margin. And also management should constantly check with the field service engineers to see if they are coping and how can they assist, because one thing i have notcied its the paperwork/admin work that comes with it. one needs assistant to manage it if they arent coping.

I personally went through this once in my career where I was overwhelmed with field calls and couldn't focus on my personal life and work either which eventually leads to burnout. My travel plans were fuzzy, my time with my family is not great, couldn't catchup with my friends and definitely "no me time" One thing I would do differently is asking for help which I haven't done before.

I am working as field service engineer since last 9 years ,but whenever this happens if management and team gets listen and taking it not as easy then service engineer can be confidential.
