In my view, #Civil Engineering has broadly 3 people specific challenges. 1. #ExperiencedExperts with 20+ years of excellent project exposure would be retired within next 10 years. 2. #MidLevel engineers look-up to seniors and peers grow and make a mark on their projects. 3. #Youngster & #Freshers, who want to get into core industry have significant entry barriers (including pay, work culture, working conditions, relocation etc.) We need to make a collective effort to improve the perspective of Civil Engineers in our society. Industry-Institute collaborations, updating curriculum to the current industry practices, faculty training, labs upgradation, review of pay-scales are some of the areas that are to be looked at.

To meet the demand for sustainable infrastructure, we must embrace innovation in every aspect of our work. I believe that resilience planning in the context of flood protection must involve creating strategies that not only aim to prevent and mitigate flood impacts but also enhance the capacity of communities and infrastructure adapt to future flood events. For this purpose, planners (governance bodies) and designers (i.e., civil engineers) must work in liaison and consider; • Integrated Flood Management • Creating public awareness by educating communities • Early warning systems and emergency response plans • Restrict development in high-risk flood zones • Regularly evaluate flood protection strategies and update based on new data and changing conditions.

It is also important to implement technology management strategies within water and energy utilities. This will include technology audits, road mapping and capability enhancements at all operational levels. Asset management strategies can also be adapted to reflect the new climate and environmental challenges being tackled by the Engineers. It is quite clear that capital investments for new infrastructure development have been impacted by growing needs for increased maintenance budgets in the light of climate induced frequent damages to existing infrastructure.

Under the changing climate and increasing urbanization sustainability can’t be achieved without resilience in our existing infrastructure. Improving the resilience of assets like existing critical facilities, power and water distribution and transportation infrastructure will have the biggest impact on society. This means our mentality needs to change from building more to maintain better. The civil engineering profession must evolve to effectively account for the interdependency in these systems and devise methodologies to systematically assess and address risk in a cost-effective way.

All lorries and HGVs who travel and work at night should be given a 50% reduction or even 100% if they can prove there company can comply and help reduction in day time traffic of HGVs if the government or the Highways agency crunched the numbers I am sure it would benefit the volume of traffic and reduce the day time activity on motorways

Making appropriate rules and regulations and engaging public, private, and governmental organizations for strict implementation with proper guidelines can be the foremost preventive measures to meet the increasing demand for sustainable infrastructure.

First 4 points are all about waste management and that is fine. Point 6 is managed by design standards. Point 5 is most important. If we better decide what we really need and distribute more equally what we have, our society will become more sustainable.

I think that what is paramount in the sustainability analysis of any infrastructure project is to consider if it is really needed for the advancement of the wellbeing of the society it is planned to serve. And when I say society I mean it as a holistic concept including the environment, the other living beings sharing the territory with humans and the potential outreach of that infrastructure on other areas.
