Networking is not what we think it is. Usually people think that talking about what we do will build connection. Not so much. The benefit of attending events is being relatable and memorable as a result of your communication skills. People remember how it felt to meet you much more than what you do. Your skills will come up, for sure, but it's always better when it comes up in a context of conversation with someone who feels rapport with you. Good ice breaker questions are always about building relationships. Positive emotions combined with knowledge of your skills create powerful anchors in people's memories and for the basis for future contact. Cultivate connection more than handing out business cards.

It's easy to attend events... but, how do you FIND the events that will serve you best? Join writers groups, check out Meetup.com and Stage32. Go to film festivals. But, the most important part of networking, is reaching out and following up. Do forget to send them that article you mentioned, or the name of that book you were talking about. Invite them to coffee.
