Fortunately, we live in a world where there are a lot of free or cheap ways to practice data engineering. Make a GitHub (or similar) account. Make an account on your favorite cloud service website. Connect your GitHub to your cloud service account (find the appropriate documentation for this). Find a source of data (perhaps consider web scraping the data so that it is as messy as possible. This is good data cleaning practice). Utilize several cloud services and build an ETL pipeline, then visualize the data. Document all of this on your GitHub account. Then repeat with other services.

Theory can only take you so far. There is no substitute for hands-on experience in any computer science skill. To build a solid foundation, start by watching videos and reading documentation, and then take the plunge. Create a project—it can be anything. Many people struggle to find real-world projects to work on. I overcome this problem by re-creating my past projects using the new skills. For example, I am currently learning PySpark.
