The global economy, post-industrial, hyper-connected, and increasingly approaching its biophysical and social limits, is a VUCA economy—volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. This means that the predictability that characterized the industrial era no longer exists. Certainty has largely disappeared. The simplicity of industrial relationships has been replaced by a complex network of multidimensional interactions, and much data no longer holds meaning without a specific context. If you don't consider 3-4 scenarios ranging from catastrophic to "not even in my wildest dreams", you won't be able to respond to the challenges and opportunities that the near future presents.

Scenario Planning can help anticipate global economic —and therefore also strategic— changes in two times: ❶ Prior to the scenario planning exercise, by identifying the variables of certainty i.e., those that will not change, which may somewhat reduce the perceived level of uncertainty. ❷ During the scenario planning exercise, by highlighting the highest impact variables of uncertainty, and by plotting the potential scenarios derived from their interactions. By so doing, scenario planning can not only help business leaders anticipate the global economy but it can also allow them to strategize towards the strategically most optimal option while defining the agility factors to remain adaptable.

Scenario planning transcends basic sensitivity analysis and linear planning processes. The key is to initiate the process with broad perspectives on potential future scenarios, taking into account current external trends and potential events. We should data-driven techniques with examples to assist the team in visualizing alternative futures for the organization. Compelling narratives should challenge conventional wisdom and managerial assumptions while being logical and practical. Involving senior executives into the scenario planning process enhances its effectiveness. Organizations that have support from senior leadership often achieve more valuable results that seamlessly integrate into strategic decision-making processes.

Although scenario analysis in a company facilitates strategic decision making, this does not mean that it can be applied in a carefree manner. There are certain disadvantages of scenario analysis related to the management of the information available from the system. That is, if there is a record of the activity and little control over time, the scenario analysis of a project will be a purely speculative exercise, since this method requires relying on real background and data to correctly establish the possible hypotheses. Therefore, doing it in a very subjective way can bring undesirable results for the efficiency of the work team. It is necessary that the scenario analysis of a project be carried out based on a historical record.

Scenario planning is a tool whose purpose is to prepare strategies for responding to or mitigating risks and seizing future opportunities. However, it should be regarded as a tool to strengthen your company or organization, not as an oracle of truth. Many people assess scenario planning based on how closely the prediction has matched reality. This is a mistake. Scenario planning is meant for visualizing how your organization will respond and how the organization could respond, rather than constructing a beautiful or horrible scenario to which you will steer.

I have chosen to write short sci-fi stories for the LinkedIn community, through which I present potential future scenarios related to technological developments. I find it a very useful channel to reach the audience and to create, in your mind, plausible scenarios related to your own evolution and that of society in general.

When crafting potential future scenarios, do not confine yourself within the heuristic framework of your organization. If you ask a bunch of sailors confined on a ship, "What will happen tomorrow?" They will likely say either we'll reach land or continue at sea, maybe one of them will mention the possibility of a storm. These scenarios might be suitable for a ship, but definitely not for a company navigating the waters of the global economy, where multiple perspectives are required. Economists, sociologists, futurists, and even philosophers can provide valuable insights, but in general, the aim should be to construct scenarios based on personal investigation. And this is an ongoing task.
