I have turned up on the first day at a new company to be confronted by my new team leader with "Oh Gordon! I thought you were starting next week..." Crushing. Or, not having any computer/laptop available for the first week, so much of the onboarding is delayed, or mandatory training can't be completed. The simple things will already make it a smooth start. It's more about avoiding obvious obstacles than about achieving perfection. Especially because everyone has unique expectations.
