Surveys that I've found very useful during orientation/onboarding for adult learners are the File of Life, 16 Personalities, Attention Challenges, Visual Stress Syndrome, How I Learn, and Learning Styles. These surveys provide a bird's eye view of knowing my adult learners.

One key aspect of e learning is a creating a learning community of people with like minded goals and needs. While there is much emphasis on the individual learner e learning can do wonders using collaborative learning experiences. Also while developing a learning experience ,the learner's autonomy, aim, needs, wants, goals and biases must be taken into account. I cannot emphasize how critical this step is in the overall design and development of learning solutions (online of offline). In elearning, since the learner and the course developer are unknown to each other, it's even more important to get the learning outcomes right and defined upfront. I typically seek advices from experts (or SMEs) to help define learning outcomes or vet them for their usefulness and validity that's likely to impact a large sample size of learners. Learning outcomes act as a guide for a learning designer to source just the right amount of content and tie our knowledge checks, examples, scenarios, activities, and even assessments to them. With these around, nothing in a learning solution seems redundant.

Another important aspect of designing e-learning courses for flipped learning is choosing the right format and tools to deliver your content and facilitate your learners' interaction and engagement. This is fantastic because I see flipped learning as a very potent and efficacious way to implement Cathy Moore's Map It strategy (less focus on content and more on activities tied to learning outcomes). Flipped learning allows effective and serious self-study and makes personal interactions later to be even more efficacious, insightful and prolific. I'd include peer discussions, group work, role plays as effective means of learning interactions in flipped learning. self-study can continue to be in the form of videos, articles, elearning courses, podcasts and the like.

Furthermore, scaffolding strategies can provide guidance, feedback, and support to learners as they progress through the course. Finally, storytelling techniques can be employed to create scenarios that connect the content to learners' emotions, interests and experiences.

While designing eLearning content for flipped classrooms it is important to provide for self assessment by students when they are going through the eLearning content. This may be in the form of quizzes, participation in discussion forums, writing short answers to open ended questions, or providing their perspectives on specific questions. These would help them keep track of their progress and also maintain their interest in the material they are studying.
