What an interesting topic and one most artists / writers are aware of. The royalties system itself is antiquated and in need of an overhaul, and there are some interesting and dynamic companies coming online to deal with this exact issue. The issue often isn’t just with the local collection societies but more to do with the international system in place, with data sharing and databases not always being aligned or working together. The key here is to ensure the metadata associated with your compositions and recording assets / IP is as it should be. Having a copyright lawyer review the contract can be a wise move to ensure your interests are protected.

This is not always an available possibility, especially if you're just starting out in the music industry. Standard contracts might not offer the best rates, however, sometimes there is no space for a negotiation.

DO NOT rely exclusively on streams or sales, which will limit your income potential. Explore other methods such as sync licensing (music in movies/TV), live performances, or merchandise. This expands your revenue channels. Currently, there are many distribution companies that are working with independent artists to obtain interesting music licenses and endorsements.

Royalties are still a huge black hole in the industry. Transparency is missing, but most importantly the right repartition and payments to everyone are missing. New tech & companies are on the rise trying to fix different issues here, but there is no one perfect solution yet. My advice, make sure you know what belongs to you - track your royalties, keep your contracts, and know what points you have on what, and where. Someone will come up with the right tech at a point, and keeping a trace on everything will give a nic check in the end.

There is a platform that is a kind of market place for royalties called Royalty Exchange. I liked this idea of investing in royalties. I find it is like the stock market or buying a company. But i think if someone has the proper marketing tools and is able to push the music of which they bought the royalties, they would help the artist expand their following and generate income for both themselves (The investor) and the artist.
