1) Expectations, 2) Ownership of Objectives (the ability execute on those 'Expectations'), and 3) Establishing clear Milestones... are requisite for any healthy partner relationship in VC. From both LP & strategic eco-dev partner perspectives.

Starts with thorough due diligence. Before forming a partnership, deeply understand their business model, market position, and strategic vision. Openly discuss long-term objectives to ensure there's a shared vision for growth and success. It's also key to establish transparent communication channels for ongoing dialogue about changing goals or market conditions. Regular check-ins and progress reviews can help keep both parties aligned. Additionally, consider incorporating mutually agreed-upon performance metrics and milestones into the partnership agreement. This not only aligns goals but also provides a framework for evaluating the partnership's effectiveness over time.

This is venture firm's most important decision. Bringing in a new partner will have a tremendous impact. Be sure to have a Mission, Vision, Vales and objectives for the company. This is something that can be before finding a partner. Evaluate your partner on the basis of these values. Does he fit those values? If not, likely not a good fit. You can verbalize the values. An example of this implemented in an org. is Berkeley MBA. Here are some of their lemmas that express the values " Questioning the status quo, students always, confidence without arrogance.." These phrases are then sent to the admissions team who can evaluate if the candidate fit into these boxes. It is making a stance and biasing the selection with the company's values.

It is difficult to recruit and hire staff as a business owner. I personally think choosing a partner is ten times harder. In a venture capital partnership, hiring a partner is like marriage. In a healthy partnership/marriage the level of camaraderie, team work, and communication is high. As such, it's important to thoroughly get to know each other before you embark on the journey of building a firm together. I recently interviewed a partner who suggested we fill out a questionnaire that would help each of us better understand how the other person thinks about financial management, investment strategy, team building, vision planning, etc. It was lengthy, but insightful. I'm happy to share it with others if interested.

Building a startup can feel like going to war. You want to make sure that you do that with people whom you trust. It’s important to build trust early on, especially when things are stable. Because if there’s one thing that is nearly guaranteed, it's that things are going to get tough and messy. You are more likely to survive these rough patches if your team is built on mutual trust and support.

If you don’t vibe well together, walk away. The world is too big with way too many people out there to get stuck with someone you can’t stand. Why sacrifice your sanity, and potentially your productivity and teams morale because no one can get along? Disagreements are one thing, and sure adversity can breed creativity, but having a healthy dose and balance of passion should never be imbalanced for a lack of team dynamics and cultural adhesion.

I think reviewing and revising our own goals is something I do introspectively, but to be good partners we should do it as part of our regular partner discussions. Having more frequent synchronizations around thesis facilitates ongoing continous alignment of interests, which is the essence of high value partnership. Try to deliver at least a 50x partnership in terms of aligning your partner interests, then do a 50x on the founder side or equivalent if you're later in the game. 50+50=100x I think if the effects don't multiply some. It's just math off the top of my head but it's probably not a bad estimate.

Also, have open conversations about responsibilities, expectations and decision-making. Honesty from the start prevents resentments down the line as challenges emerge on your startup journey.

Partners will have their way of working but if they are trusted upon and believed in, the outcome will be for sure the desired one.
