How can you incorporate art installations to create a unique atmosphere at your event?

This may be simplistic but start with values. If your event is about World's Strongest Man or rugby, an artist into introspection and meditation is obviously not a good choice. Match values tho and you can give the artist free reign. To find an artist, see which artists your audience are into and seek similar. Pay properly, also. I still see too many instances where this isn't right.

Through my experience working with art and public spaces the most important things is communication with the clients to understand and be clear what their work is about and the audience they want to communicate to so one can interpret their aim message and create with that in mind.

An installation must create both spatial and societal impact. It is essential to understand the environment in which the installation will evolve in order to create a synergy between the space, the artwork, the audience, and the event. Boldness is required to evoke wonder and provoke questions; the installation must foster a desire for immersion and intellectual and spiritual interaction. An event implies an invitation to the exceptional, whether ephemeral or not. The installation should leave a lasting impression in the memories of the moment and time, becoming the vehicle for the message of the event.

In my experience, I have been commissioned to create work in different types of public places, upon being given complete freedom to make choices in the allotted space for my large scale paintings in each instance. With that assurance, I made choices regarding considerations necessary for assessing the type of audience that would be best for each particular venue. Some examples of my completed work was an elementary school in Indianapolis, a medical school’s conference area, and the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, each being entirely different settings.

Art should tell the story; it should be part of the event concept, specific to the space, and interactive. Achieving this requires clear art direction and goals. In my opinion, multimedia installations, set design, and lighting choices would work best. Overall, art should transport you to a certain mindset and mood, which can be achieved through collaboration with contemporary artists and clear assignments, viewing the event as a complete experience.

If you like an artist’s work look through their website at originals or even blogs of past work. They may be able to print an image large for you to fit your project.

I always allow the client to contribute ideas in the beginning of a project in order to make it feel a team effort. I make their visions work with mine. I like to take a ton of photos of the space and get a feel of where I am physically then take it back to my studio armed with info/photos/opinions/color charts, etc and the creating commences with all of the gathered knowledge and so far that has worked not just for me but also for my clients.

One tip I've learned for event curation is to always prioritise object placement. Secondary criteria include the background of the art, the artist's motivation, and the art piece's significance to the event. For example, if an art piece is placed near the elevator vs at the end of the event, which do you believe will be recognised more by onlookers? Definitely the one that is near the elevator. When a guest enters an event, their mind is open to receiving knowledge, as opposed to when they reach the end and their attention span has been fatigued. That's why the most critical parts are placed in the beginning.

Since objective is the Event, art here is to enhance the activities and event environment. Art cannot be a standalone focus or distraction, but subdued and aesthetic, merging and enlivening the event.

If only they can be more interactive art installations. Such installations bring don't just add to the beauty of the event but they become engaging for the audience who come to attend the event. There has to be a connect with the people present.
