How can you make software engineering more modular with microservices architecture?

Consider building a monolith at the beginning :), if you starting with one team. Then after ramp up, you can evolve project into a modular monolith per team. And if project will bring a good revenue in 2-3 years, it will be a good time to start implementing microservices.

The object of microservice architecture is to ensure each service can be developed, deployed, tested, and maintained independently. Below are some of the key point to consider when designing software using microservice architecture: 1. Identify the boundaries of each microservice and design them to be as independent as possible. 2. Define clear interface contracts for each microservice to ensure that they can communicate effectively with one another. 3. Ensure that each microservice has high cohesion and low coupling. 4. Leverage existing frameworks and libraries to reduce development time and improve code quality and standards 5. Implement module versioning to ensure that each microservice can evolve independently.

I'm actually finalizing a post about microservices and Kafka. Talking about how Kafka takes microservice architecture to a new level. As microservices tend to be ephemeral and scaleable, Kafka provides the reliable connectivity and performance boosting abilities that microservices lack without Kafka. Also, I think we all recognize that developing microservices can take place independantly of each other. Thus providing the ability for each to scale independantly. And with Kafka in the middle, the ability to connect with more services and also share and enhance the data created by microservices.

I would rather call them “challenges” rather than drawbacks, when we implement microservice architectures. These are listed below: (1) Cluster Management of multiple disparate microservices needs a robust design of the management plane. (2) Load Balancing becomes a critical aspect (3) Fault tolerance, isolation and HA design needs to be thought through. (4) Metrics collection from many microservice instances needs to be designed at the pod level as well as the site level. (5) If always run the risk of having “too many” microservices - also known as “microservice hell”. This can lead to high RPC traffic which may be difficult to scale. (6) State sharing has to be external to microservices - which needs a robust design.

Kafka can significantly help overcoming the frailty of having microservices responsible for managing their own data as it creates a bottleneck for the access to the information for it's domain

When we decide to adopt a microservices approach in our architecture, there are several associated challenges. I see that the main challenges includes: - Increased complexity; - Difficulty in maintaining and evolving the ecosystem; - Ensuring data persistence; - The need to hire professionals with microservices expertise, which can increase costs in the corporate world.

Some design tenets for microservices: (1) Encapsulation: Bundle discrete re-usable functionality as a microservice, similar to how we design classes and libraries in programming. (2) Services Paradigm: Each microservice needs to expose APIs for integration and interaction with other services. Hence, we need to follow a service exposure paradigm. (3) Discoverable: Microservices and their APIs need to be discoverable through a registry design pattern. (4) Service Mesh: Microservices need to scale horizontally with load balancing through a service mesh architecture. (5) Instrumentation: Each service needs to be instrumented for fault, performance and configuration management. Just my 2 cents.

Ao projetar microsserviços, é crucial definir claramente os limites de cada serviço. Uma estratégia que me ajudou foi usar Domain-Driven Design para identificar subdomínios lógicos e modelar os serviços em torno desses domínios.

La implementación de microservicios requiere tecnologías específicas. Contenedores como Docker y Kubernetes aseguran portabilidad y escalabilidad, empaquetando el código del servicio y sus dependencias. Para la comunicación, las API RESTful, empleando HTTP y JSON, ofrecen simplicidad e interoperabilidad. Frameworks como Spring Boot y Express son útiles aquí. Las colas de mensajería como RabbitMQ y Kafka facilitan el desacoplamiento y la entrega asincrónica de mensajes. Estas herramientas, incluyendo plataformas como OpenShift y servicios de mensajería como Amazon SQS, son fundamentales para una implementación efectiva de microservicios, combinando eficiencia, confiabilidad y coherencia.

The following management functionality should exist in a microservice architecture: (1) Fault Management through alarms. (2) Performance Management of the API layer as well as resource assurance. (3) Runtime configuration Management (4) In-Service software upgrades (5) Logging - file based and streaming (6) Trace Management on-demand for APIs and specific result codes. (7) Automated scale-out and scale-in through scripts or orchestrators (8) Overload Control Policies & Throttling. (9) Access Control (ACLs) using CLI or API (10) Automatic Installation and Commissioning on multiple cloud infrastructures.

One word substitution and solution for all these is “cloud native applications”. It’s present and it’s going to be future for at least half a decade!!

In my experience if we manage the expectations around our requirements we can manage the solutions with microservices. Mismanaging the requirements and expecting microservices to manage it is no brainer.

We started with creating a Platform Engineering Team who had an expertise in all the latest Cloud Native Tech - Container, Kubernetes, Grafana,Istio, Jaeger, Database We trained some key members in CKAD & CKA We really believed in 12 factor methodology We then identified a smallest product in our Monolithic portfolio & moved it into microservices using Domain based Design Approach Defined a set of benchmarks & did Lot of testing on the same to ensure KPIs are met beforehand Also Identified a core set of Engineers & Leaders who were ready to take the risk boldly Stake Holder Management on this transformation Journey Database was left in VM/ BM This led in future to make our BSS products microservices enabled
