If they hold the paper up to sky in front of a full moon, the words of my pitch slowly appear as if by magic. They're so enchanted by this celestial experience, they have no choice but to accept my pitch.

First of all you shouldn't use the same sales approach for a sports car as you would for a family minivan. Some publishers specialize in specific genres – cozy mysteries, hard-hitting thrillers, sweeping historical fiction. I witnessed a promising author completely miss the mark by blindly submitting her manuscript to every publisher she could find. There was a time when I used to think that we could plan as we write, but gradually, all the things become so overwhelming, and planning is the last thing on your mind. You need to take care of your format and word count from the very start. Originality + constant learning = your biggest assets as a writer!

There is a growing trend of self publishing or working with companies which help writerpreneurs/ authors to do so. This avenue has its own benefits but can also lead to a feeling of working with little to know reward. As a self publishing children’s book author, I found myself feeling like that. It was hard to find time to do everything. Write, source illustrators, create the book layout, copyright, market, promote. Just writing out this list was exhausting. However, my reward is that I did it my way. Now I rarely look for a publishing company outside of the one I am building. I feel better able to negotiate, having learned to do things myself. Now I can focus on establishing marketing and promotion relationships.

The best way to get your novel to a publisher would be through a literary agent. Publishing houses depend on agents more and more every single day. Gone are the days of them wading through slush piles.
