How can you use feedback to identify areas for growth?

Getting feedback from your internal team will be part of a process but what I think VCs don't do enough of is asking their founders what worked and what didn't. At the end of every year, I schedule a session with each of my founders (typically 30 minutes to 1 hour) to provide them with feedback on the year and also ask them about what they liked and what we can improve. I'll usually get some useful insights on how to improve the experience for the following year.

Listening to understand and to learn is a skill many of us can work on. In the context of feedback, the other party is watching and observing how we are using it to improve ourselves and the organization. When a leader asks for feedback and then asks follow-up questions and ways for them to improve or adjust their ways, it shows how they are using it and may help nudge others to accept feedback with less resistance. Most of the time feedback is said without context. Critical thinking and cues can help one implement feedback appropriately. We try to develop possible solutions to implement feedbacks and then get feedback on the solutions. Updating our feedback mechanism on a regular basis has helped us to ensure that we improvise as efficiently as possible. The process is initially resource intensive, but adds value once the process is in motion.

Some things to consider when ranking the importance, urgency and impact of feedback are: Who provided the feedback? Feedback from an industry veteran, a trusted advisor or a key portfolio company is more likely to contain key insights. What motivated the feedback? It’s important to consider the motivations of who provided the feedback when determining how to prioritise the feedback. How will this feedback impact your portfolio performance? Feedback that affects your key decision making or that contains actionable advice should be prioritised over general feedback, as it will be much easier to implement.
