In my experience with LCA I would say each and every step is very crucial to consider in order to improve sustainability of the product, service or project LCA has four important steps; -Goal and scope definition -Life cycle inventory -Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) -Inyepretation The above four steps are intelinked to each other and interdependent. For example you can not gather sufficient data if your goal and scope is not well defined.

This analysis helps to identify opportunities for reducing environmental impact & it's improvement in various categories such as resource depletion, carbon emissions & water usage. Analysis helps us to identify hotspots with most significant environmental impacts - this allows organizations to focus sustainability efforts on areas that will yield the most sustainable benefits. Again, comparative analysis for different product/process alternatives helps to choose eco-friendly option.

Data quality is very essential in undertaking LCA. The endeavor should be to gather primary data as far as possible. Secondary data when resorted to, should be relevant in terms of geographies and economies (data from one part of the world may not be applicable in another part). The scope for the LCA should be well defined, else the study may be difficult to complete and in cases unrelaible. Lastly, assumptions if any should be well documented.

Agreed. LCA data requires you to combine gut instinct about your own processes & materials, with broadly accepted industry references. Although credible & fairly comprehensive references are available for use, there is no all-inclusive database out there - nor are we ever likely to have such a universal one stop repository. This is where legacy understanding of your enterprise's products or projects - gained over repeated cycles of deployment, user feedback & experiential learnings, has to be put to good use. Needless to say, as in all credible efforts for sustainability, a completely thorough, self critical, and transparent approach is required to assess these impacts. Combine inhouse expertise with external audit to good effect.

Inventory analysis is a critical and complex process in the LCA that would determine the quality of results generated that represent the environmental impacts. This step takes a longer duration and demands good quality data sets of inputs which further help determine resource efficiency of individual processes in addition to ecological impacts. Data transparency and accuracy are essential and would require some effort from the manpower while introduction of digital assessing tools can keep a regular tab.

Gathering data on all stages of the product or process life cycle, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal is key to LCA. One must ensure that data is accurate, up-to-date, and representative of the specific context and region of interest.

This is an important point. Garbage In Garbage Out (GIGO). The output is only as good as your input. Which means that a lot of consideration is needed when determining what goes into the LCA model.

LCA software or tools can become handy to conduct the data analysis. These tools help quantify environmental impacts such as carbon emissions, water usage, energy consumption, and more. Calculate impact indicators such as Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), and Eutrophication Potential (EP). This helps in analysis of the results to identify hotspots and areas with the most significant environmental impacts. Comparison of different scenarios or design alternatives to determine which options are more environmentally sustainable is suggested.

Remember that LCA can also have a bias and can be produced to benefit a particular product or industry over another. The criteria chosen are critical, and LCA can only say some things. Many other metrics need to be looked at. For example, when the Single-use paper cups industry claims that LCAs show that single-use products have a better footprint than reusable options, it's essential to understand the number of uses they have used to make their calculations. Also, when it comes to LCA, they may base their result on the best-case scenario. Still, in most cases, the end-of-life doesn't happen to be the one the product has been designed for (i.e., recyclable but not recycled, for example - or even littered or unmanaged waste).

Ask a third party to verify the data. Very often LCA data is used to make sustainability claims that end up on product labels. With a lot of self reported data, having a third party audit helps you identify where you may have made mistakes and strengthen the trust of your customers.

A good way to validate your LCA's result is to have it reviewed by an external party. This person / entity may challenge assumptions and calculations you have made and bring up new valuable insights.

Based on the LCA findings, the companies must develop strategies and recommendations for improving sustainability. I would highlight the importance of the third party verification. On 22 March 2023, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a directive on green claims. The proposed directive would require companies to substantiate the voluntary green claims (e.g. taking a life-cycle perspective). No single method for the assessment would be stipulated but compliance with the claims would have to be verified and certified by a third party ('verifier').
