It’s a fine balance and also a decision that has long lasting impression both ways. I am not a recruiter and nor have a #Hiring tag on my profile, yet I feel honoured that a lot of professionals reach out and engage for various reasons including career decisions and job. I feel it’s my obligation to respond and I do so to 80% of the people and many of them are already in my team. Some people have joined my friends too. I do so as I feel position and popularity comes with sone responsibility and youngsters in the trade needs to be encouraged. I am doing my bit !

One thing that I've found helpful is to separate the personal from the professional. This is a good way to assert boundaries. However there are times when the lines blur. In these situations it's a good idea to quickly move the connection to your professional channel/s and lines of communication. I do this by sharing my professional email address and ask them to reach out to me there. If I don't hear from them, maybe they weren't that serious in connecting in the first place.

One thing I found helpful is, also on more informal channels like social media, always guiding the candidate back to our official channel. Yes, its GDPR compliant but also helps you not to lose a potentially interesting candidate in your inbox. Any enquiry overstepping professional boundaries can be left unanswered (or if you feel you have the energy for it, commented and corrected).

When possible send out a follow up email as well to make sure everyone's on the same page.
