How do you motivate your project team?

In my experience, if you want to develop a high-performing team then seeing your team members as more than simply resources is critical. Start with curiosity about the people in your team, who they are, what gets them going each day, what gets them into flow and what brings them joy. As you invest in these relationships and learn about your people, you will find new ways to connect the dots between the what (project activities), the who (your team) and the how (project delivery). In this way, you build a strong resilient team, and improve both how things are done and in most cases, your project outcomes.

This right here can never be overemphasised! The team’s growth and success is the project’s, having to develop your team alongside the project is a great deal. As a project manager, I try as much as possible to charge my team to get better at what they do and learn from other team mates, it works like magic!

The best way I found to keep my teams engaged was to use our project to help them develop their skill-set and take on bigger roles as time went on. One team I was leading had a good mix of younger employees and people who had been with the company for awhile. I always liked to push the younger employees to take on new tasks so they continued to learn and have the ability to ask questions and gain knowledge from the more senior members of the team. This allowed for develop and knowledge transfer, and being more proactive to making sure things could get done if some left the team or was out for an extended period of time. The team was never scrambling to get things done or forced to figure things out on the fly.

When coordinating a new team, I make a reference to the work on a ship, where everyone's contribution is important to reach a safe harbor. It doesn't matter whether you're the cook or the captain, without food and direction, we won't reach a good port. It's also essential to have clarity about potential storms and challenges, and the importance of understanding that we are a team, and doing our job well in those moments can make the difference between surviving and shipwreck.

It is very important for a successful project coordinator to understand the scope of the project very clearly. Clear and thorough understanding of the project provides motive force to drive the project forward.
