Struggling to integrate student feedback into your teaching?

Understanding that student feedback is important to teaching and learning is key. As teachers,we facilitate learning and one effective way to guide students through the learning process is allowing them to feedback, this allows you to direct and redirect them till they achieve the desired outcome.

We should always consider that when someone criticizes our approach, it can be hard to accept. To overcome that we first need to accept that feeling, wonder why we respond in a negative manner. Teaching is all about reflection, right? For example, I remember my participants telling me that, while I speak, I tend to go super fast. The strategy that I have been using is, telling/reminding them that we know that I speak fast, so you help me by making a fist, and raising it up high, so that I know that it's not easy to keep up with me. I will pause, breathe and take a slow pace. You don't have to incorporate your feedback alone. They will be more than happy to help!

Inicialmente, parecia um comentário negativo, mas percebi que era uma oportunidade. I actually implemented the feedback immediately, if it is feasible, makes good sense and doesn't hurt or insult anyone. As was mentioned then the students have some buy in of the class. Of course they never get ownership, but they can be partners. They realize that their voices and opinions are heard and are important and this does create a kind of shared respect of their role in the class and a kind of a joint venture or a feeling of we are all in this together. Once they see that they are your partners in this education organization, they be more inclined to realize that you will not hurt them or embarrass them, but actually trust that you want what is best for them Then you have reached the magical place called the true classroom.

Students feedback is imporatant for an educator. Deeply reflect on it, take positive suggestions from it. Think on the negative feedback shared by learners. Make an effective plan to deal with what lacks in your class. Work out a strategy to make your ideas reflect effectively with student community.

It could be tweaking how I teach to better match their learning styles, updating course content to make it more relevant and engaging, or changing how assessments are done to be fairer and more reflective of their understanding. By prioritizing these impactful changes, I aim to make the learning environment better and more responsive to their needs.

This step is crucial as it demonstrates a commitment to improving based on student input. Based on my feedback about wanting more interactive exercises, I include more small-group discussions and hands-on activities in my upcoming lessons.

Begin with small adjustments to your teaching methods and watch how they impact the class and student engagement. This way, you can make further tweaks based on ongoing feedback and observations. In my project, Suara Kami @ Our Voices, we emphasize this approach. By gradually incorporating student feedback, we ensure that our teaching methods evolve in a way that truly benefits our students. This project highlights the importance of listening to and valuing each student's input, helping them feel heard and included in their educational journey.

I continuously assess the outcomes of the changes I've implemented. Are students responding positively? Are learning outcomes improving? Evaluating outcomes helps me gauge the effectiveness of my adjustments. After implementing a new teaching strategy, assess student engagement and comprehension through informal quizzes or class discussions to gauge if the changes are positively impacting learning outcomes.

A teacher is a life long learner because each cohort is different and what worked in one class need not necessarily work in another class. Syllabus and curriculum will remain the same but the students will be different, therefore adapting lessons continuously will help the classes. This will also benefit the teacher to keep innovating and over a few years they will have created a variety of plans on one topic simply because of adapting continuously.

Teaching and learning work smoothly where there is effective and prompt feedback. Constructive feedback aligned with the need of the child makes it more interesting.
