Students are cyberbullying in your school. How can you effectively intervene and prevent harm?

Cyberbullying is a growing concern in educational environments, affecting students' well-being and academic performance. As a guardian or educator, you play a crucial role in addressing and preventing this harmful behavior. Cyberbullying involves the use of digital platforms, such as social media, text messages, or gaming sites, to harass, threaten, or embarrass individuals. Antes de pretender reconocerlo, es importante recordar que se debe partir de crear conexiones y realmente conocer a nuestros estudiantes. Esto debe evitar confundirse con "ser amigos", como una vez me quiso decir un estudiante, al que amablemente le expliqué la diferencia: usted siempre puede contar conmigo y confiar en mi, es parte de mi trabajo, pero no sería profesional que yo cuente de la misma forma con usted, por eso es que no somos amigos. Una vez que haya una conexión real con los estudiantes se puede entender cuándo hay patrones de comportamiento qué cambian y atender las recomendaciones señaladas.

I am a firm believer in educating everyone on the effects of bullying and cyberbullying. Working in K-12 education as a Behavior Specialist, I see the effects of this more than I want to admit. I have begun to go out of my way to educate students on the mental and physical effects of bullying, but I also educate them on empathy. Contrary to popular belief, I believe empathy can be taught, especially with younger students. Having students understand the effects is necessary, but I think a key part of prevention is walking in the shoes of the bullied. Only then, by truly humanizing the experience, can people truly appreciate statistics and other data, and we can start to see the changes and improvements in real-time.

Me inclino inmensamente a la postura de educar a los alumnos respecto a esta temática, es esencial nombrar las acciones por lo que son, en este contexto en particular, el término más acertado a emplear es "Netiqueta". Es nuestra obligación como educadores, hacer llegar a los corazones de cada uno de los estudiantes, la importancia de la moral en todos los cotextos, incluso, dentro del medio tecnológico. Además de ello, la concientización a los padres de familia sobre el tema en cuestión, elevaría exponencialmente las probabilidades de que el cyberbullying, no vuelva a ocurrir, o en su defecto, si llegase a producirse el efecto contrario, estaremos conscientes de que, hemos dejamos plantada la semilla en cada uno de los actores.
