What are the best cross-functional innovation strategies for startups?

Keeps things simple. Have a Vision that can be expressed in a handful of Principles. Focus on Objectives and Key Results, over detailed process (unless it's legal or financial compliance). Everything more than that (the process, detailed org charts etc) will change too much and too fast to have long term value

I would say the rule of thumb for a startup in 2024 is base minimum to accept this: Every modern startup is a tech company. Even if they sell wood. Everything requires technology: The marketing strategy, lead generation, product placement, and even innovative gamification strategies for consumer product engagement.

Something I have found to be crucial when starting out, is to have a mission and purpose that reaches beyond your personal wants and desires. Why? Because solo missions are rarely successful and it's hard to get others to support, back and maybe even carry a mission that is singularly focused. Identifying a shared purpose (benefit) let's others know that you care about what matters to them. Only then will your goals resonate, and compel others to work toward S.M.A.R.T. goals with you.

In my experience, cross-functional teams work best once SME's have been identified and aligned with project goals. However, everyone on the team should have ample opportunity for input in the form they are most comfortable. The loudest voices or more experienced voices can sometimes overshadow more reserved team members. Facilitators or project leads are necessary to keep the project moving forward, but don't necessarily have to be an expert in all of the areas. They should however have more than a surface level understand of the scope of the project and intimately know what the intended outcome(s) are.

Conscious infusion of diversity and conscious inclusion are wonderful catalysts. Diversity of thoughts, diversity of styles, diversity of life experiences that lead to diversity of outlook are all critical ingredients for innovation. Then you need a foundation of culture. First, respect for the diversity is critical. When respect is there, inclusion is easy and is effective. To enhance innovation, it is important to revisit processes - removing bureaucracy and bottlenecks. Once the input condition & environment are set, innovation tends to naturally follow. To channel this and give this a direction talk about the big picture, the vision, the goals, etc. If such a team in such an environment can be inspired towards a vision, you got it.
