What are the best practices for increasing output in nuclear power plants?

Upgrade the equipment to a higher efficiency level is a good way to improve the output, but also a good operation practice to be implemented. Less waste = higher output!

Upgrading the equipment may bring advantages in two ways in terms of increasing the overall output. Deployment of newer, high efficient technologies would help reducing the power consumed by the BoP ( balance of plant) equipment and also could help gain the losses due to wear and tear accumulated in years. Digital solutions and control systems are especially important to consider as well, to be able to leverage the design envelope of the existing and new equipment at its best which would also help to maximize the power generation output.

Newer equipment and technologies could make the plants operate more efficiently and provide additional MWe to the grid. Almost all of the US's current operating nuclear power fleet was designed and built in the 1970's and 1980's. Newer turbine generators, feedwater heating components, and controls can substantially boost plant efficiency. Additionally, several large pumps could be modified to become variable speed pumps, which could substantially lower what is commonly referred to as house loads. This power could then be sold to the grid, thus boosting the plant's output.

Extending them out the past 24 months would mean more online maintenance, which could be possible but would require some work. Fuel reprocessing should have always been considered an option but was rejected mostly for political reasons, using non-proliferation as justification. This will not necessarily help specific plants but would result in the entire fleet more effectively using Uranium resources.

Use more advanced fuel designs, such as mixed oxide (MOX) or thorium-based fuels, which can improve fuel utilization and extend operating cycles. Implement better fuel management strategies to maximize burn-up and minimize waste production.

The U.S. has enough of a spent fuel repository, we can absolutely start reprocessing spent fuel! This will greatly reduce lifecycle costs of currently operating plants, allowing for bigger budgets to either build more units, or improve existing ones!

While load following can improve the use case of nuclear power plants, going beyond the traditional base load use case, it will certainly not enable an output increase, but actually the contrary. Moreover deviating from the optimal point of operation will result in an efficiency decrease.

Load following for large nuclear power plants will not increase plant output. These plants are best used as large baseline load plants. They are most efficient when they run 24.7 at 100% power. This is also when they are most valuable to the overall electrical grid stability as "spinning reserves." These large rotating generators act as a dashpot to help mitigate swings in electrical loads that will occur as more and more other sources of generation, such as wind and solar, make their way onto the grid.

Implement load-following capabilities, allowing the plant to adjust power output to match demand, improving grid stability and flexibility.

Actually implementing load following features will not help to increase the output on the other hand, this may help to increase the revenue through power generation depending on the power market design and availability of secondary and tertiary markets.

An important aspect of industry Best Practice is through knowledge transfer. If you're wanting to increase efficiency, you need to first reduce transmission losses. Why are we generating so much energy, just for half to be lost over a long distance?? Build small-scale plants that can near the district or town you want to power, and you've not only decreased those inefficiencies, you've also increased overall grid reliability! Half of a state isn't reliant on a couple of power plants and thousands of miles of unprotected transmission lines. Each town, city, or even each factory has its own safe and reliable power supply. You can also use the waste heat from the traditional cooling systems to heat homes! And this doesn't even include the topic of radioisotope production!! (Which can be done with a NPP!)

Certainly, constructing new, more advanced nuclear power plants is one of the best ways to help achieve net zero without sacrificing the availability of electrical power. To this end, the US should consider overhauling the current regulatory systems in favor of one that can quickly review and approve designs and construction of new advanced reactor systems. Advanced reactors, just like any technology that humans have developed since the 70's and 80's, would benefit immensely from computerized monitoring and control systems and new manufacturing processes. Imagine if the Airline Industry had been regulated in the same way that the nuclear industry was regulated. We would be making regular trips in Boeing 707's instead of the 787.

Consider outreach programs to local High Schools and Middle Schools in the region. While co-op programs for universities are common, it's important for a younger generation to see and understand what it means to be part of the nuclear industry. There are many myths and rumors that surround nuclear power - education programs typically do not include anything "nuclear" in the curriculum of your schools, so the Power Plant may be the only outlet to explain how Nuclear Power remains one of the safest sources of electricity. An informed youth becomes a motivated university student (that then comes to you in a nuclear co-op program).
