When I begin teaching a student, I tend to focus on verb tense conjugation and usage. Since verbs are the action words essential to creating complete sentences, my goal is to first build the foundational building blocks necessary for speaking and forming complete expressions. From there, my lessons will elaborate on vocabulary tailored to the student's needs. But the emphasis is communication through proper verb-tense usage and beginner-style sentence structuring. I want to equip my student with the skills necessary for having a conversation.

The seed has been planted, now it just needs to be watered with enough repetition.

Also I think that when it comes for language learning, speaking int he authentic environment is super important.

A piece of advice that I have carried with me throughout my teaching career is to be wary of making the activity the objective/lesson - i.e., your activity serves an educational purpose; it isn't the end itself. Lots of teachers get caught up in how cool their activity is and lose sight of what they're actually trying to accomplish. Function over form.

Expecting a student to go from carefully crafted materials in the classroom to authentic materials in the real world is setting them up for overwhelm and disengagement when it all gets too challenging.

Using materials that involve the use of different types of intelligences is key. Thus, students can practice the subject in different scenarios and classes become more dynamic.

Selecting materials for activities is extremely sensitive for ESL leaners. Having too many examples or long wordy explanations will render the activity futile. Often learning a second language is overwhelming, having extensive activities that may feel like you are providing a lot information for will actuallu ahve the opposite effect. I've taught English Home Language and English as a Secondary Language and have noticed learners, who feel the activities are too lengthy or overwhelming, lose motivation to learn. I enjoy putting together a package for each concept or topic - which has simple materials which won't overstimulate and which communicates the same idea often to ensure retention.

Agai, we all act and learn differently. So that is why we need different type of assessment tools as well. Some of us feel really nervous when we have to do a test, and don´t succeed in test, even though we know the topis at hand. So we need to assess without causing stress and make it possible to everyone to show what they have learn.

By providing multiple, extended "we do" practice in the language target, you can help decrease the anxiety around having to speak. Provide the correct model, practice it together (again and again), then have students independently replicate/apply.

Next Steps In the next class I taught them how to write an opinion essay.

Incorporate walks or visits to places the learners are familiar with, or are actively part of their day to day lives. For me the fastest progress I saw with learners picking up and using new words was in a real world environment, where they could link the words to actions and items that were of interest to them.
