Always be curious and ask questions. Learning never stops. Ask questions like “Why did you use this solution?” It’s good know why a solution was coded a particular way so that you can grow in your ability to solve problems.

While writing/solution follow few steps: 1. Write a working code first. Do not think too much about design patterns (Exceptions are everywhere). Sometimes delivery deadline matters a lot. 2. Refactor your code without breaking it. 3. Review once and then ask your peer/senior to review it. You will be amazed by the suggestions/learning you will get through this step. 4. Implement suggestions. You learned something new today. 5. Check in your code and wait for BUGS :) .

I often insist freshers on doing reverse engineering when I interact with them. I let them find a good open-source project and suggest doing exactly the same program by themselves or adding a new feature to that project. It helps them to read codes thoroughly.

Don't attempt or force yourself to read the specifications from the first chapter to the last. Instead, seek the learning experiences shared by others, always start with hands-on practice, and through one project after another, become more proficient with the specifications.

Following coding standards is the best practise while writing a code. It not only makes it easy for you to write the code but also makes it easy for reviewing the code. Certain of the best practises from my coding standards would be, 1) Variable declaration 2) Code commenting 3) Grouping code into regions (as per the code editor being used) 4) Following project architecture across all forms 5) Maintaining code consistency across all forms in terms of naming conventions and processes.

No one can be fully accurate in following the coding standards right away. The best way to learn coding standards and best practices, like the back of your hand, is to contribute to open source projects. Mostly all of the well maintained projects have test cases coded which make you adhere to their standards. Another manner to do the same thing while getting paid is to join a good organisation. The right organisation would follow the best practices and so would you if you join them.

Published "standards" can be a dry, laborious read. Choose a section that applies to your problem, review it, and then read related sections. I find it helpful to read once with my eyes and then use a screen-reader to read a second time with my ears.

Building multiple projects in succession allows you to see patterns across projects and step back and view the larger picture. Leveraging others to understand what challenges they are running into on theirs and looking to patterns that solve for both. Best practices can emerge from the patters that solve multiple complex problems in similar ways. Essentially building a wisdom approach.

Collaborative learning is key! Joining communities is a fantastic way to adopt best practices from other developers. Learning from others is a continuous journey in our ever-evolving field.

I agree with Julio Canizalez. Communities whether in-person or online are wonderful. I love my Discord communities. I give you permission, however, to leave toxic communities. There exists a culture of abuse and ridicule among older programmers. If you stumble into one of these groups - leave.

Collaboration is key, when it comes to learning. There is always a chance to improve and constructive feedback from team mates and online communities are really helpful.

Communities don't help if it's just a bunch of developers lying about how good they are because they signed NDA's that prevent them from spilling the beans about how bad things also happen. Try to hang offline with seasoned developers who can honestly share their experience with failures off the record so you don't just get fed marketing talk by someone who wants to get hired, wants to hire you or sell you something.

Courses could be a great way for beginners to learn, but I'd never suggest it for more experienced developers, unless your goal is to learn some new tools you never used before. Courses could have really outdated informations, in that case I'd recommend following communities like those on: - Reddit community, with real life examples; - Software Engineering Daily; and so on...

Fabio Quinto Marsiaj has a good point about outdated information in formalized courses. I am constantly requesting that my professors add current material to flesh out our outdated textbooks. In general, however, a good professor/instructor will add up-to-date material to a course. Code Boot-Camps tend to use the latest practices and are most open to examining new information.

As Fabio has indicated, Courses/Books are amazing for beginners to understand the foundations but not necessarily as useful to Intermediate or Experts. That said, you don't necessarily need to follow programming courses, but you can expand your foundations by learning about subjects that don't change as fast (ex: Mathematics, Processor Architecture, ecc...) and which allows you to improve your own efficiency and understanding.

ChatGPT may hallucinate at times, but it will examine your code step-by-step, as a single unit (do not post proprietary code to the online platforms), or by pretending to be a specific user if you engineer your prompt correctly. One intelligent question to ask during the interview process is how feedback is provided during the development process. It’s ok to ask questions like “what’s your code review process” or “do you have code quality standards” because (never forget this) you’re there to work, but you’re also there to learn as well.

Professionally, I often base my code on good practices and gold standards. Sometimes, an organization you work for doesn't have a comprehensive set of standards, so you must figure it out yourself. Don't force yourself to adopt the practices that make your life miserable. Start slowly with a basic set of rules enforced by ESlint for JavaScript projects or something similar. Then, with time, progress to apply more standards until you get used to them. This approach worked very well for me. It didn't work for me when I was overwhelmed by a new and completely unfamiliar set of standards.

I have really come to enjoy mob programming. Everyone on the team is present and rotates through. At any given time there is a person navigating and a person driving. All team members can give input. The collaboration is phenomenal.

I'd like to add my vote for pair and mob programming. Not only can it produce code and solve problems faster than one developer working alone, but each participant learns from the others in the group. And you learn more than just new techniques and language features. You learn to see problems from different points of view. In a mob situation one person might be focused on testability, another on efficiency, or usability, each wearing a different metaphorical "hat". Then you can use these "hats" when you're working alone again. You can ask yourself "what would X do in this situation?" and by doing so, see the problem from a different perspective. This approach is especially helpful for addressing areas you tend to neglect or deprioritise.

Engage in mentorship & coaching programs as you can learn thinking patterns and solutioning techniques of a more experienced teammate - you cannot find that in books. While I was mentoring my teammates I noticed that they had the most rapid growth in their programming skills if I didn't provide them direct answers but rather navigated and provided prompts/tips on how they can find the solution on their own. This way they learnt from me not the info they could read from some article or book, but the patterns they can reuse in future for any task or project.
