What are the best ways to prepare for your first day at a startup?

Same as any other job. Shower. Meditate. Pray. Quick stretching. Power breakfast. Caffeine. Dress sharp. Smile. Optimistic. Head up. Hands away from your face. Walk into office looking upbeat, optimistic, with a controlled enthusiasm. Take it one day at a time. No future tripping. No complaining. No whining. No Entitlement Issues. Give 100 percent and leave the results to God.

It's as same as we do most of the things in life: 1. Dress well 2. Stay sharp and focused 3. Set your short and long-term targets 4. Build the best team 4. Stay positive 5. Accept and be open-minded 6. Stay hungry

Try to grasp the founder/startup's vision comprehensively. Seeing the vision clearly would help you align with its mission, that should be the objective. This would also help you climb the ladder quickly in a startup.

Startup and scaleup environments thrive on chaos! In my experience, job titles are handed out like candy, and business strategies are always in flux. This constant evolution is what makes working in this space so exciting. On day one, it's essential to clarify expectations with founders, senior leaders, and teammates. For managers, alignment with your team sets the stage for success.

Specially at the early stage, show proactiveness and passion for the mission. Lines can be blurry at this point in terms of the scope of your role, which will give you opportunity to explore a range of roles that will be broken down as the team scales. This is your chance to fast-track your career in the short-term but it is not for the faint-hearted! I have witnesses successful corporate executives fail as early-employees at startups because they have to be a one-person-show and have no team to manage and supervise. You gotta get your hand dirty in this world!

1. Introduce yourself in the first meeting and end with "things I know and you can reach out to me for". 2. Ask for an onboarding doc and a handover doc from the previous person who was holding fort before you joined. 3. Be very clear about who your reporting manager is (even before you join a startup - this is imp because this defines your learning curve). It's like a ref check that you need to do! 4. Adopt a "no excuse" attitude - it's better to accept mistakes than blame it on others - nobody appreciates this attitude, especially in a startup where already structure and processes are missing. 5. If possible, be pro-active in terms of setting processes for you and your team - it'll eventually make you successful!

Warning: there won't be any. 🤣 Chaos reigns at early start ups. You'll be expected to bring your own devices and onboard yourself to a plethora of SaaS microservices - each solving one specific problem. They won't integrate well at first and you'll end up juggling a dozen or so SaaS accounts. Ah and no one cares (yet) about Cybersecurity or compliance, probably because no one understands it. Almost everyone I know that has worked at a startup describes their first day as "drinking from a firehose." Bring a note book or note pad and take notes (you can transfer them to your laptop later but putting pen to paper helps you focus on who's speaking rather than a screen) 2. Ask your manager about those that remain during your first 1:1 4. Enter with grace. Don't jump in with opinions/solutions before understanding what was done before you joined.

Start by mapping your commute. Use tools like Google Maps to plan your route and estimate travel time. Prepare a backup plan in case of unexpected delays. Ensure you have the necessary tech tools. Check if the startup uses specific communication platforms or project management tools. Download them in advance and familiarize yourself. Dress comfortably yet professionally. Understand the startup culture – whether it's casual or more formal. Pack essentials like a notebook and pen for quick notes. Know if there are nearby eateries or if you need to bring lunch. Consider the dietary preferences of your potential team members for any welcoming gestures.

At most startups, job titles and JDs are often just starting points - almost always, you'll have to wear multiple hats and adapt quickly. So, understanding your *actual* role is the first thing to do. Two things help: Observe. You'll notice plenty of things – unclear processes, inefficiencies, missing info. It's tempting to call these out but hold off on the criticism. These gaps are really opportunities for you to fix. But don't rush in. Take your time to understand the full picture and jot down your thoughts. Ask. Dive into conversations with your team. What do they need help with? Their answers will give you a clearer understanding of your role than any JD ever could. Good way to also position yourself as a team player + prob solver.

Working at a startup is like working with an Army. One has to be mentally prepared to perform multiple roles and responsibilities with a single aim of organisation growth and survival. 1. Alignment with the company vision. 2. Open to experiment unusual and new methods to solve intricate problem statements. 3. Instead of restricting oneself , he/she should be flexible enough to perform various tasks as per the need. 4. If one has a skill which other team members are lacking, instead of keeping it secret, he/she should educate others on the same. Lastly, while working with colleagues, the approach should be more collaborative , less competitive.

Go without expectations. Could be a real startup culture. Could be a toxic one 😂 many entrepreneurs became entrepreneurs because they are not team players 😂 so better to go with zero expectations and roll with the punches. Don’t be a stickler and stick to JD. Startups are ever evolving and JDs don’t work here, if they can’t fire you without notice you can’t stick to a JD. Do a temp check on how the culture is. If you don’t belong, don’t be long. Many startups are accepting to failure and mistakes, and the corporate “dignified coverup” while expected in corporate world, could be seen as dishonest here.

As name suggest, it's "startup". Every one is "CEO & office helper". This summarizes the attitude you need to carry from the first day in a startup... flexibility, adaptability, innovativeness, team togetherness are basics. No rules ,work within the boundaries...

Of course Communication is key to success at your first day at startup, Your vision and Why must be clear from your manager to security guard. Define your vision and objectives. Understand your Team, stack holders and customers. Create an action plan. Timing is everything, so breakdown tasks into small milestones with deadlines and assign to your team accordingly, get progress reports daily basis. Evaluate and adjust your plans according to feedback.

Take the initiative to introduce yourself to your colleagues. Building positive relationships early on is essential. Approach your first day with a positive attitude. Be open to meeting new people and learning new things.

Based on my Experience. To enter in the world of start-up. First must a very good plan to build relationship for the purpose of entry into the arena to survive and win with no clear rules. To all your competitors, partners, customers, government laws, Environments, and Timings. Thing should I do first is study the area, get know as much possible who, when, where, what and why I'm about get into as preps. Having good info to assess before making a move could save time, money and get-out with dignity to fight another day. Just like boxing. Have to fight for every two minutes and when the next round start. Fighter already wiser but battered. Must keep up to get his opponent's known weakness for a knock-out to win in time.

Making allies. This was the chapter I found most interesting in Michael Watkins' best-selling book "The First 90 Days". This book talks about the first three months as decisive for your success (or failure) in a new position or new company. But the issue of building relationships was something I had never given much thought to and which I now think is crucial.

Also, never ever believe that you know how to do something. Always be humble, willing to learn, openminded and ready to change. The secret of a good startup is understanding the dymanics of your own skills, your ability to communicate with the team, and how you can quickly adapt to the emerging business.

I believe the most important aspect before joining a startup is to get to know their founders history, values, beliefs and mission. A due diligence is extremely important. It isn’t an easy task but I can’t stress the importance of knowing who you are working with. Early stage startups are mostly about people; the founding team and early employees then the culture will evolve top bottom and as it grows. Better Join an A team with a B idea than a B team with an A idea. Successful startups who passed the finish line usually have pivoted once or twice, if not triple. Signs that should get you worried; lack of transparency, early bureaucracy, and the founding team isn’t grinding and/or hands on.

Everything else is okay. You can do research, review your job roles and all. The most important thing is to be mentally ready to be a part of Chaos!

Whatever role you have been hired for, Demonstrate leadership and show growth attitude. It provides an opportunity to grow along with the company.
