What do you do if you want to excel in your Thought Leadership internship and outshine other interns?

One thing that I’ve found helpful is being curious about general principles and know how of the particular industry you work in. The earlier you cultivate curiosity of “why is this so” and “how is this done” the better it is for your future self. This can help form an opinion on a particular challenge, reform, solution or technological advancement in that field. Your thought leadership then doesn’t only come from following trends and breaking it down but a base of knowledge- banked over the years. I’ll also go as far as saying that be curious consistently. Find ways to feed your curiosity and learn about pockets of gaps or challenges within the field of work. You don’t need to know the answers but pretty soon they’ll come too.

The one thing that I feel has helped me is to seek out opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional teams or participate in projects outside your immediate scope. This not only broadens your knowledge but also fosters a diverse perspective and cultivates valuable teamwork skills. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities and be proactive in seeking feedback to continually refine your ideas and contributions. Remember, becoming a thought leader isn't just about what you know; it's about how you apply that knowledge creatively and collaboratively to drive innovation and progress within your organization.

It is important to build confidence with stakeholders, team members, and users. Possessing emotional intelligence is necessary to provide strategic guidance, and create a strong team with a leadership mindset.

Networking is the most important thing period. It’s investing in time to genuinely learn from leaders, peers and even people who are just starting out in the industry. It can be intimidating to present thoughts on complex trends and issues facing the industry to senior leaders but I’ve found, an open ended conversation on the “feel” or “view” on something lends to a more robust discussion on a topic than direct, pre-meditated questions. Seek mentors and don’t wait to have a mentor program within your company- the idea of networking is to reach far and wide so don’t limit yourself. Have a conversation over coffee. Plus you may never know, you might just find a few friends who become a sounding board throughout your career.
