A few years ago, I observed that one of the team members was proficiently gathering requirements, but that they didn't necessarily challenge their (internal) assumptions before translating those business requirements into their technical designs. To help them, we organized a few sessions to promote challenging assumptions when gathering requirements. in the first session, the person identified a business problem and I demonstrated how I would go about validating my assumptions. A couple of weeks later, I created the business problem and helped the person through a set of questions to validate their assumptions. After a couple of iteration, I am proud to say that the person has gained a lot of confidence in asking questions.
