What do you do if your classroom struggles with implementing innovative teaching methods?

I understand that innovation in education requires adaptability and responsiveness to the diverse needs of students. When initial attempts at introducing new teaching methods encounter challenges, it's essential to remain flexible and adjust strategies based on individual learning styles and classroom dynamics, ultimately fostering a more effective and engaging learning environment tailored to students' needs and interests.

As a teacher, you need to demonstrate a flexible mindset to your students by openly discussing the importance of trying new things and learning from mistakes.

In my experience, students do better when we are creative with how we implement strategies and include them in the process. It’s imperative that we embrace flexibility and meet students where they are, but it’s also imperative that as teachers we understand that the effectiveness of a strategy has a lot to do with the way in which we present the method. To meet students where they are, find out where they are before you ever implement a method, and approach the progression and introduction of that method based on where your students are initially. Flexibility has everything to do with the baseline. If you know what they think before, then you’ll know where to start with a more effective approach that would increase their receptiveness.

The most important thing is to keep being persistent in a gentle way, which means that if a new method makes your class tired you stop implementing it for a while. You need to be sensitive with each individual and start testing things gradually while also not losing hope on anyone. Another important thing to do, is to discuss in advance what you are going to do. By doing this, every student feels involved !

Adaptability is the key. Any development demands adaptability, be it innovation or education. It is important that educators become flexible towards changing their strategies at any stage of implementing innovation. The ultimate motive is to have an impactful teaching -learning experience so, depending on the type of challenges, the changes can be done. For eg. If the class is having late bloomers, a different module or a different technique can be added to include them. In case of any challenges regarding resources (eg. failure, of projector screen) teachers can find alternative activities like using TLM, group activity, or gamification.

I recognize the importance of gathering feedback from students to refine teaching methods and enhance their learning experiences. By fostering open communication and actively listening to students' thoughts and feelings about new approaches, educators can tailor their methods to better align with students' needs and preferences, ultimately fostering greater engagement and success in the classroom.

Understand that not every innovative teaching method will be successful the first time around. Be willing to adapt and make changes based on feedback and outcomes.

This is a beautiful example of why teachers really give tests. I’m not grading their knowledge, I’m grading my effectiveness as a teacher and their growth based on my effectiveness. If the majority of a class misses question #6 on a test, then I probably didn’t do a great job of teaching question #6 or did not assume a relevant strategy for that concept. Feedback from our students, formally and informally, shows that we value them and the way they learn. It also helps us to stay relevant to their needs, perception, and expectations. Even more so, it helps us to become stronger and more personalized learning can take place as we level up in knowing where they truly are. Learning is a collaboration just as teaching is, regardless of title.

When innovating, it’s important to be grounded in research. In addition, trial the use of different vocabulary and syntax in explaining tasks or teaching points. As Alison Peacock says, teaching should be a repertoire not recipe - be willing to adapt.

Many teachers fear collaboration because of the way education has become so restrictive over time. We need to get back to that time where we invited other educators in our classroom to observe us to help make us stronger and better. We must be willing to recognize the strengths of those teachers that surround us and draw upon what works, what doesn’t work, experiences. As educators our greatest joy is to create experiences for our students in which they learn from one another rather than just us. Why should we think any different about our profession? Our greatest joy should be learning to maintain relevance from one another and our students. The experiences of others grows perspective.When we change our position, perspective increases.

I view collaboration with fellow educators as a source of inspiration and support, especially when navigating challenges in the classroom. Sharing experiences and seeking input from colleagues not only fosters a culture of innovation but also strengthens bonds within the teaching community, ultimately leading to the discovery of new strategies and the enhancement of classroom practices tailored to meet students' needs.

I believe that investing in professional development is key to overcoming challenges in the classroom. Attending workshops and seminars focused on educational innovation not only expands our skill set but also reignites our passion for teaching, inspiring both educators and students alike. With continuous learning and growth, we can approach classroom challenges with renewed confidence and competence, fostering a dynamic and enriching learning environment.

When implementing anything new, you must have patience and persistence. You cannot use the excuse that it’s too hard to keep from working to get breakthroughs. You also have to access the situation to determine what might be the contributing factors to the unsuccessful results. Patiently work with the students and collaborate with colleagues as necessary. Give it a little time, remember this is something new and has a great learning curve for everyone involved!

My most important tip: be patient! Transformation is always a process in which there is friction and people have to be convinced. Especially when it comes to learning, we see in research that we are very fixated on the way we learned to learn as children. So be patient ;)
