What do you do if your efforts to demonstrate your value to your employer aren't resulting in a promotion?

Suppose my efforts to secure a promotion have yet to yield results. In that case, I consider seeking feedback from my supervisor, setting clear goals, expanding my skills, seizing opportunities, networking internally, documenting achievements, and understanding organisational timing. Engage in candid conversations about my career trajectory, and if necessary, explore external opportunities while maintaining positivity and persistence in my professional journey. Additionally, I assess any areas where I can improve or address concerns raised by my employer and take proactive steps to address them.

I agree with these, however assessments for promotions or growth and development are two sided. Has good and clear conversations with the right people in my organisation happened. Does all involved have a clear pathway and plan with milestones so everyone knows we are on the right track. When having 1-2-1s or reviews check in on development plan. Also challenge the plan or assessment in a safe and positive way to ensure everyone is understood.

Reflect on your performance if efforts to prove your value aren't yielding promotions. Engage in self-assessment, exceed job responsibilities, and use feedback to identify areas to improve. Enhance soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership qualities. Clarify your ambitions to your employer through honest discussions about your career aspirations. Remember, promotions aren't solely based on hard work but involve timing, available positions, and company finances. Be patient, continue demonstrating dedication and initiative, and keep a positive attitude.

I believe my work output speaks for itself and I don't need to prove myself worthy of a promotion. Self assessment helps in identifying areas I may be lacking in which I didn't notice needed improvement. Then I start by improving on these.

Feedback is one of the ways in which one can identify areas of improve in performance at work. That of supervisors, peers and clients. With positive and negative feedback I can start improving and doing things differently.

I have believed in identifying my target role as the one in which I would like to be promoted to. This has helped me perform at a higher level than expected. I am currently practicing this and I hope it will help in getting my next promotion. I am doing things my peers are not doing, that are above my current job requirement.

If my efforts to demonstrate my value aren't leading to a promotion, I take a proactive approach. I seek feedback to understand areas for improvement and what's lacking in my current contributions. Then, I set clear, measurable goals with my manager and work towards them to showcase my commitment and drive for growth. I try to build strong relationships across departments and seek opportunities to showcase my expertise and contributions, increasing my visibility within the organization. Lastly, I remain patient and persistent, understanding that career growth takes time and consistent effort.

We talk about promotions but I would change our language and mindset with this subject. Finding the right role for you and having a development plan in place for growth is as important as a “promotion”. I would consider ensuring I always have a personal and professional development plan so I can measure, assess and see how and when my next role is possible. I have a 1, 3 and 5 year vision for myself.
