What do you do if your employees have skill gaps that need to be addressed?

Mentoring and coaching can do miracles with under performers. Empowering the employees to have self awareness through self assessment of own skills and its matching to the job profile. Further, they could be hand holder to develop their skills through conscious action.

Encourage self-directed learning. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in activities and pursue goals when they feel a sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When employees take ownership of their development, they are essentially demonstrating autonomy in their learning process, which can lead to greater engagement and skill growth. Leaders can create a culture of continuous learning by valuing and encouraging learning and skills development. This could involve recognizing and rewarding employees who take the initiative to improve their skills, as well as creating opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaboration among team members.

Ask for permission to offer some feedback and maybe a new idea. Feedback is always a sensitive issue so make sure that the feedback is offered with empathy, accuracy and desire to offer learning opportunities. Check the impact of feedback and if the feedback met with understanding and/or any questions. From there, assess if the employee is interested in developmental possibilities and invite them to make suggestions. It gives an understanding of their perspective. Again, with permission, offer what feels development for their skill set and explain clearly what they get from what you are describing. Speak with a positive intent so the employee will feel they are receiving an opportunity rather than a "corrective experience".

Identify the gaps: Conduct skills assessments, and performance reviews, and consider business goals to pinpoint what skills are missing. Develop a plan: Create a training program (workshops, online courses), mentorship opportunities, or tuition reimbursement for relevant certifications. Focus on different learning styles: Offer a variety of training methods to cater to auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Track progress and adjust: Monitor employee development and iterate the training plan based on their progress and evolving needs.

Smart goal should always be their but people should not always focus on goal and achievement but it should be where a person is a better from day one to another it is a completion of improvement among and induvial only.

If a skill is absent it must be trained. Finding a method of training to build the skill is first. Next the employee needs a safe place to practice the skill without penalty. This builds confidence and allows them to learn from any mistakes and make some tweaks. Next would be to set progress monitoring goals alignednto smart goals or metrics to determine the rate of growth within the employee.

Most of the people after identify gap start directly the training but one more steps should be their, does the person wants to learn or not. Motives to learn things Human training is very different and in most of the cases its been identity that training is not effective because person was just learning for knowledge not for implementing the knowledge

Look at an LMS that provides a wide variety of training topics and concentrations. Another way is to coordinate outside SME to train onsite or virtually to a small group. When I led a 223-person team to support the entire IT hardware infrastructure at all of the 1744 Lowe's Home Improvement retail locations in all 50 states, I did a deep dive around technical and soft skills training options to improve performance. I determined that customer service and communication skills were lacking in over half of the technical employees. I customized a learning program, created deadlines, and had my regional leaders verify that all training was completed. We were able to raise the Customer Satisfaction Score from 81% to 97% for 24 months straight.

Sometimes mentoring is the answer until the employee can a quire the know how. This does not work with everyone. One of my employees refused (out of dignity and high level of her education) to accept such a process, so I had to do mentoring myself and send her to a training outside the company. It depends on the nature of the gap and the person's character and position

Match less experienced employees with seasoned colleagues who offer guidance, support, and knowledge transfer in areas requiring improvement. Create either a structured mentorship program or foster informal mentor-mentee connections aligned with shared interests and objectives. Promote open dialogue and consistent feedback loops between mentors and mentees to monitor advancement and tackle obstacles. Mentorship is essential as most of the skill gaps can be only fulfill if we have a good mentor as a mentor is a one who not only guide the candidate also show him what not to do as in most of the cases people don't know what not to do and they end up doing the wrong things

Define precise objectives and milestones for skill advancement. Conduct routine evaluations, feedback sessions, or progress meetings to gauge employee performance. Offer continuous training, workshops, or resources to bolster skill development. Encourage employees to assess their own progress and extend guidance or supplementary assistance where necessary. By actively overseeing progress, you can monitor skill growth, pinpoint areas requiring refinement, and ensure employees are sufficiently equipped to excel in their respective roles.

Monitoring is a process and need to observe on the day to day basis as feedback session should be their and also feedback should be given in the most indirect way so it should not hurts the trainee

Find a special project where the person needs to know the skill, partner them with someone who knows the skill, and ask them to accomplish the project. In the end, ask the person who needed to fill a skill gap if they feel confident to use this skill. Depending on their response, congratulate them or give them another special assignment and partner. This is a very powerful way to both teach and to reinforce team skills.

Be upfront with the employee and ask if this skill is something they want to learn. Explain the outcome if they do and do not learn it. Let them decide, and offer them options for pursuing how to learn it. Most importantly, agree on a metric that confirms whether or not the employee has learned the skill sufficiently should they decide to pursue it.

To address skills gaps it is important to start with a common understanding that there is gap in the first place and what we hope to achieve bridging it. Is this a question of enabling team members to achieve their objectives that supports the direction of the organisation and/or is it to serve the team members longer term career aspiration? There are also many ways to develop skills and having a conversation around - self-study, on the job learning (shadowing, project work etc.) and formal trainings. This approach opens avenues that team members may not have thought about earlier and build accountability on their side for their personal and professional development.

A rarely discussed aspect of addressing skill gaps in employees is the importance of personalized learning paths. Recognizing that each employee has unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles is key. Tailoring training programs and resources to individual needs can significantly enhance the effectiveness of skill development initiatives. This personalized approach not only boosts engagement and motivation but also ensures that employees acquire the specific skills they need to excel in their roles, leading to a more proficient and confident workforce.

Assessing skill gaps among employees must be done periodically & people must be supported through a mix of actionable to sail through. This includes formal training/learning engagements, mentorship, collaborative projects, continuous feedback. Recognize & reward of skill development is an important aspect.

What’s more to that, consider developing a rewards and recognition system that acknowledges employees' efforts in bridging their skill gaps, and for those who demonstrate significant improvement or level of mastery of the desired skills. Recognizing and celebrating their progress not only boosts morale, but also reinforces the importance of skill development within the organization.

This is a good example of working life, where it is coordinated with the Human Resources Department to study and arrange these gaps and determine the professional courses required to address these gaps. This process may take place within a short or long period of time.

Every company will experience skill gaps. Some of them will come on so fast (particularly tech skills as we're seeing with AI right now) that we will need to develop specific programs to get broad swathes of employees upskilled. More importantly, however, is to create a culture of learning so that individuals are trying to upskill themselves - often within the flow of work. * It is the responsibility of the employees to build the skills required to excel in their roles today and tomorrow. * It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure their people have both the access and the capacity to continuously upskill themselves. It is the responsibility of the people managers to help guide their reports on what skills to build.
