What do you do if your healthcare team lacks a culture of innovation and continuous improvement?

If your healthcare team lacks a culture than you can take several steps to foster change: 1. In my current organization, we are in a position of growth and restructuring. As the senior leader of operations, it is critical that each move we make is in a positive direction regardless of the difficulty of the move. Here’s my advice to those about to be in this situation, analyze each team member and what they bring to the table. Find their strengths and weaknesses and build to that (this may require to release and find external talent). If you can’t leverage these moves you will struggle. Once this is done, build near, short and long term goals and get moving! Hope this helps.

Higher level thinking is only possible when the mind is not in survival mode. Burn out, overtime, and high patient to staff ratio's bring more than the physical cost. Front line staff who are fully engaged in putting out the fires are unlikely to be able to come up with a 'better way'. I think most healthcare organizations no matter the sector, payors, physicians, and facilities have to hire more staff as their first change. Until then innovation will be a hard sell and even harder to come up with. For people starving for the lack of bread 'let them eat cake' has the same ring of insincerity as it always did. Give 'the people' what they need first. Once heads are above water, staff will be able to think and innovate

There is no one stop solution to this problem and we often find this issue. Definitely current situation needs to be assessed and after that team members to be clearly communicated what we are expecting from them and for that their involvement, inclusiveness and empowerment is the essence along with guiding, mentoring and feedback. They also need to be trained and we'll trained to accept n adapt the need of innovation and continuous improvement. Their skills to be upgraded so that they excel rather fail

Participating in conferences, workshops and specialized committees & even academic education open eyes for innovative opportunities in the institutions. At the hospital where I work, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit manager joined the NICU committee at the Lebanese Order of Nurses for almost 2 years attending all the meetings lead by experts in the field. She learned the concepts of developmental care in neonates and implemented, with the approval of the neonatologist, all the interventions at the hospital NICU, and taught the NICU staff the importance of such care & its implementation. The patients outcomes improved & she was recognized by the Lebanese order of Nurses for this work in their Nurses Day celebration May12 last year.

When I see such a lack, it is high time for introspection and charting down a corrective roadmap of how the causes leading to this situation can be overcome. This begins with changing my mindset and outlook of the capabilities of my team members, initiating and contributing myself in Blue sky thinking so that I set an example for the team. Secondly, providing the members with required resources and continuous support, and not judging them for the failed attempts would certainly go a long way in creating a positive culture for innovation.

Eu acredito 100% que a liderança pelo exemplo é o tipo de gestão que mais aproxima a equipe do propósito e dos valores do projeto e/ou da organização. A equipe tende a ser um reflexo do líder, por isso que o gestor precisa conduzir seu time com ações e comportamentos positivos. A melhoria contínua precisa ser praticada pela liderança, numa metodologia conhecida e estruturada para que todos consigam ter clareza em suas responsabilidades e nos resultados buscados. Valores morais, éticos e técnicos são “imitados” pela equipe, seja por vontade de agradar ou por foco no desfecho pretendido. Por isso, o líder precisa ser inspirador, responsável, comprometido, atualizado e capaz de influenciar positivamente sua equipe.

We also must inform the current situation that if we are not getting upgraded we will lose our place.It's applicable for the organization as well as the individuals.

It's a big deal when a healthcare team scores low in innovation and the culture of it. It reflects poor leadership. If I have such a lackluster bunch on my plate, my goals will be to inspire them creatively in the shortest time frame. It's customized training time! It's time for aggressive coaching and mentoring rolled into one with focus on capacity building, mind resetting, and projects challenge until individual strong sparks create a conflagration of revolutions around improving processes, service delivery and timelines, cost reduction, and work-life balance. It must be a new highly engaging season of creativity inducement for all the team members to get back on track

If my health care team lacks a culture of innovation and continuous improvement the first thing I need to do is to introspect and look within, as this culture of innovation and continuous improvement is driven from the top ie by leadership both in words and actions. So somewhere we are failing as leaders to Walk the Talk, always remember we need to set an example, we need to do what we expect our team's to do. Once the leader sets the example most follow suit, for some of those who do not, it's time to crack the whip after setting expectations because unlike other industries in health care someone else has to pay the price when there is a mistake committed.

Find a team that does! Seriously, there are a lot of frustrated people that are simply on the wrong team. Trust me, I saw the Detroit Lions cycle through quarterbacks for my childhood haha. The sports analogy here is the best one - there's some great players that don't look great, simply because they aren't on the right team. If you're the team leader, there's a lot of things you can do to train/inspire/change and work towards a more innovative culture. If you're simply on the team and it's not moving at the pace, change, etc. that you wish - find a team that is! (it may even be within your own organization).

Culture happens from the top down. Start with a look at leadership. Who or what is driving cultural lack of innovation and improvement? People? Processes? Resistance to change? Sub-cultures within the organization? Ask the hard questions and do the "fearless moral inventory" then put together a committee of employees at every level to determine, assess, and brainstorm ideas for changing the culture. Hint: change management is CRITICAL.
