Once you ask "Why" about seven or eight times, you will eventually start to unpack what's really going on and then you can work on finding a solution. Involving your team and the folks who will be directly executing the solution is the critical success factor in this exercise. It's okay to say, "I don't know" and be vulnerable - that builds psychological safety.

Something I want to stress for those seeking mentorship is that the mentor cannot tell you where you want to go or what you want to achieve. I find hardly any other field changes as quickly as IT and within this, IT Operations. Especially in times with rapid AI advancements it crucial to stay on top of current developments, keep learning and more importantly, keep educating your team and those around you. Especially for older generations it can be difficult to adjust to new technology when we haven't seen such a radical change in decades. It's also important to understand what is helpful to your operations and what are gimmicky hypes.

Embrace change with time, stay ontop of things by self learning on new technologies, adapt to new system, processes, gain new skills and knowledge, read and listen on current affairs of technology.

It's best to be in a spot where current things are stable while you're also looking to improve and advance what is in place, both personally and professionally. As consumer needs change, client needs also change, and you need to be able to adapt as efficiently as possible.

In the field of IT, continous learning and being able to adapt to emerging technology is the key. We need to come outside of our comfort zone and keep upskilling ourself. Also, having an agile learning approach will help us grow in the field of IT operations as any hindrance that may challenge you can be mitigated through this approach.

In my experience, pressure makes diamonds and overcoming challenges by using them to further your knowledge is one of the best ways to get ahead. In addition, learning the right questions to ask will put you in the best position to overcome the bulk of challenges you come across.

Remember OODA Loop. Observe, Orient, Decide and Act. When the issue is resolved, don't end it there. Create a continuous process of review so issues can be resolved when they're still small relatively easily and without a lot of effort on the team's part.
