I'm assessing my skills for two specific jobs I'm interested in. It is important to retool yourself with the necessary skills to remain relevant and more marketable.

It is always important to research the field and the trends associated with a field when making a job change. Don't just look at the employers, but also study the industry and trends locally, regionally and even nationally. Only then assess your skills vs. standards and choose and a program that is properly accredited. Industry accreditation was created to hold a standard across an industry and employers will know what standard you are already meeting at interview time. Don't assume a degree is what employers are looking for often they want certifications and experience. If you have experience without a certification/degree check prior learning assessment with a school and get your experience transcripted by an educational partner.

I want to improve my networking by attending industry events and forming real connections with professionals in my field. I would like to also find educational programs that will provide the exposure needed for particular skill requirements.

This is a key component to demonstrate your growth and development. An updated resume will show your commitment and dedication especially when you upskill. It will also give insight into where you're heading.

I would also suggest that you volunteer with a non profit. Giving back time and talent is a benefit while you have extra time to give. There are some great experiences to be had and many would appreciate any expertise that can be provided. It can expand your network and provide an additional support mechanism while also filling your gap.

After Spring Break Many educators reach “hair pulling” stage in a classroom, right after spring break, when students just aren’t interested in hearing the teacher in front of them. Here’s what I did. Plan ahead. Use the time for reinforcement of all concepts taught prior to spring break to get ready for final exams. Prepare a list of assignments that are self-driven with specific due dates. Use the first 10-15 minutes of class time to discuss any areas of confusion and leave the balance of the time for group work or individualized assistance. Make sure students are keeping a log of their progress and report out intermittently. Students get work completed and teachers save their hair. Win-win situation!
