What do you do if you're unsure which leadership development path to choose?

Leadership can take so many different forms based on the audience, the situation, or the end result you’re seeking to accomplish. Not all leaders fit in every mold. Assessing what you are best at - whether it be motivating, connecting, empowering others, leading a small team or big crowd, etc. - is the key here. Once you identity your specific leadership attributes, it will be so much easier finding the best ways to employ them and achieve the most success in any endeavor you embark on.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there... Being brutally honest about who you are, what you stand for and what brings joy and value to your life. Although its a journey but its not fun always. Seek for feedback, resist the temptation to challenge the feedback just embrace it and take what you can/want/will change. Work on one development area at a time, be good at it and them move to the other. Don't wait to master the skill, a 7 or 8 is just fine.

Reflect on your week, write down what you have learned and what you need to learn, have a checklist Small steps are just fine, you might not need to attend a 6 month program, possible incremental efforts are more than enough. Work on what you have, it could be a group on linkedin, at the office, local community. A mentor/coach would be the ideal, the challenge is to identify one which can be available and accessible when you need them. That's my first choice

Start by slowing down. Too often people make decisions about their future from the wrong state of mind. Get focused. Come from a place of abundance, think big, and make sure whatever you chose, you chose something that inspires you first. As the saying goes, if you don’t love what you do, you won’t be doing it long!

We can skew the picture to be all about wanting to be a leader when in fact we might be a great follower or second. Truly working at supporting someone can also give us insights into ourselves as potential leaders.

Otherwise, the entire exercise would be futile, and it would lead to more confusion than clarity of vision. A more fruitful step could be to seek the professional services of an experienced coach who can help you unlock your potential and become self-aware. Ultimately, the answer lies within you. A coach will partner with you to find the answers that you seek. An experienced mentor can help you as an accountability partner during the exercise. But it is you who need to find the answers.

Meeting with people, whether they're in your network or individuals you admire, and directly asking for their help can be incredibly rewarding. It's about being proactive, taking initiative, and recognising that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar territory and seeking guidance from those who can offer valuable insights and perspectives. So, don't hesitate to push your boundaries, reach out, and ask for help—it's a powerful way to propel your leadership journey forward.

This can either make or break your leadership career. You must ensure that the individual is not only knowledgable enough to give feedback but must not be too biased to a single point. Most people give advice from a place of personal experience and that tends to color the feedback. It would be prudent to take any feedback, filter it through an internal sieve before taking action.

One key aspect of experimenting is forming a baseline to work off. For example, if you are a police captain, your parameters would be different from the leader of a project manager team. When forming your baseline, figure out your personality (a leadership style that is at odds with your core self will fail), what constitutes success in your organisation, and how to make changes when opposition comes.

One thing I have found helpful is taking bold risks to set my path. Then, I adapt, evolve, and thrive, creating a continuous loop of growth. Leadership blooms amidst these risks. Examples: Experiment: Will lead with balance of directive and participative approaches. will try new approaches, techniques, and strategies. Will hold a brainstorming session, encouraging team input and decision-making. Will observe their approach nd offer guidance as needed. Wil incorporate more participative elements along the way. Evaluation: Will assess whether my team feel engaged nd empowered? is decision-making process efficient? any diverse perspectives? should thrive with challenges regularly, or refine approach?

Doing a strengths based survey can help you identify what strengths in a leadership role can be leveraged. Along with that have a practical plan in place suited to your industry and your growth goals within the organisation.
