What does a licensed independent clinical social worker do?

1 Roles and responsibilities

As an LICSW, you will have the chance to work with a variety of populations and tackle complex issues that affect individuals, families, groups, and communities. Your clinical skills and knowledge can be used to assist clients in overcoming trauma, abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, grief, and more. Additionally, you will collaborate with other professionals such as doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers and lawyers to coordinate care and promote your clients' rights. The typical tasks that you will perform as an LICSW include conducting intake interviews and assessments to identify strengths, needs, goals and preferences; developing and implementing evidence-based treatment plans; providing individual, family, group or couples therapy using various modalities; assessing progress and adjusting interventions; documenting services and keeping confidential records; referring clients to other resources; participating in continuing education and supervision to improve professional development.

2 Work settings and populations

LICSWs can work in a variety of settings and sectors, such as mental health clinics, hospitals, schools, private practices, community organizations, government agencies, military bases, correctional facilities, or employee assistance programs. They can also specialize in working with specific populations or issues, such as children and adolescents, older adults, veterans, refugees, domestic violence survivors, substance users, or LGBTQ+ individuals. Depending on your work setting and population, you may encounter different challenges and opportunities as an LICSW. For example, you may have to deal with limited resources, high caseloads, ethical dilemmas, or safety risks in some settings, while you may enjoy more autonomy, flexibility, income, or recognition in others.

3 Differences from other social workers

LICSWs are different from other types of social workers in several ways. First, they have more education and training than generalist social workers. To become an LICSW, you need to have a master's degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited program, complete at least two years of supervised clinical experience, and pass a national exam. You also need to obtain a state license and follow the regulations and standards of your jurisdiction. Second, they have more scope of practice and authority than other social workers. As an LICSW, you can independently diagnose and treat mental disorders, prescribe and monitor medications (in some states), and bill insurance companies for your services. Third, they have more opportunities and responsibilities than other social workers. As an LICSW, you can advance your career by becoming a supervisor, consultant, educator, researcher, or leader in your field. You can also contribute to the profession by mentoring, advocating, or developing new knowledge and practices.
