What are the economic challenges to achieving food security in urban areas?

Rapid urbanization has seen the influx of people into urban areas thus outpacing the development of necessary infrastructure and services leading to overcrowding, inadequate housing and increased completion for resources hence exerting economic challenges related to food security e.g unemployment and inadequate infrastructure.

First, what is the specific criterion for urban areas or urbanization? Is it providing health, education, etc. services? Or is it the availability of infrastructure, such as potable water, sanitation, electricity, roads, etc.? Is it a criterion for population density? Or is it the construction standard? I believe that we must first settle on a standard in order to define what is meant by urban areas and civilizational expansion. Secondly, the population represents human resources and is therefore the most important factor of production. Therefore, population increase in itself does not represent a problem. The problem lies in the mismanagement of resources, whether natural or human, and does not represent a scarcity of resources.

Economic challenges to achieving food security in urban areas often stem from the need for government leadership to recognize the integral role of density planning in supporting community and faith-based centers. Planners must also consider cultural diversity to ensure accessibility and relevance of food offerings. Leveraging public institutions to enhance education about nutritious and appealing food choices, as well as skills development for healthy cooking, is crucial. These steps can help address the economic barriers that hinder urban food security, fostering a more informed and resilient urban population

O crescimento populacional é um desafio para considerarmos em termos de alimentação, mas associado está o consumo consciente em todas as frentes. Com relação à alimentação a população ainda tem um grande responsabilidade pelo desperdício de alimentos nas residências o que contribui fortemente para pensar em campanhas de educação. O que se desperdiça poderia alimentar a população mundial, segundo dados da OMS. Portanto falta consciência de todos os envolvidos para ações mais eficientes na condução do tema.

On the contrary, bottom of the pyramid is the most affected during climate crisis. Climate related physical risks might be caused due to anthropogenic activities, but the marginalised sections are highly vulnerable during floods, droughts, etc. The bottom of the pyramid is not even directly contributing to rapid urbanisation or other economic development activities. During such climate induced situations (floods, droughts,etc.), access and availability of nutritional food gets highly compromised.

Um exemplo possível de ser percebido nas cidades é o que se chama deserto alimentar. As pessoas de baixa renda são afetas por não ter acesso a alimentos não ou pouco processados e saudáveis por morarem longe ou em regiões que não são abastecidas por frutas, verduras e legumes por serem perecíveis e não existir locais que ofereçam esses alimentos, causando a carência nutricional dessa população ou ainda promovendo a obesidade pelo alto consumo de alimentos processados por serem mais baratos.

Income inequality and poverty is a challenge to achieving food security in urban areas but this can be addressed by encouraging household farming/backyard farming . This will ensure families have crops to feed on as well as sell for survival. Community farming hubs can be created to provide food for families within the community as well as stipends for those working in the farm and wealth creation for communities from sale of produce.

Inequitable food distribution: In urban areas, there can be an unequal distribution of food resources, with some neighborhoods having limited access to supermarkets or healthy food outlets. This disparity, combined with income disparities, can worsen food insecurity and contribute to uneven health outcomes among different socio-economic groups.

Muitas são as frentes para perdas e desperdícios de alimentos. Em particular, o desperdício de alimentos ocorre em grande parte por falta de consciência de quem opera no segmento de food service. Os envolvidos no processo de transformação dos alimentos em refeições muitas vezes desconhecem as alternativas de uso integral dos alimentos nas preparações, desprezam alimentos por apresentarem pequenas imperfeições, além de não armazenarem corretamente para preservar por mais tempo permitindo a futura utilização desse alimento. Tem ainda o descarte de alimentos após o preparo e que não foi consumido, podendo ser doado, mas por questões legais ou de falta de acondicionamento correto, se torna resíduo. Ainda há muito por fazer nesse tema.

Foodservice sector I.e malls, hospitals, schools, entertainment etc are closed loop environments. These sectors can lead the charge on food waste on loss with education, tactical operational solutions like tray less, small plates, and implement technology in the back of house to reduce production waste. Finally , food banks, and other social institutions need to be included in building these initiatives from the start.

I think the definition of quality has to be reimagined . Best before dates is a big reason why consumers waste a lot of food which could have be utilized. Another dimension is the way our food looks I.e any vegetables or fruits that aren’t perfect looking get thrown away. Imperfect foods are still tasty and can be utilized in different ways.
