What are the key principles of student-centered curriculum design?

Student-centered learning supports active learning instead of passive learning in the classroom. It allows for students to be in the driver's seat of their learning by asking questions, investigating, reflecting, using and evaluating evidence, and communicating findings. The teacher is the facilitator, NOT the disseminator of information. Inquiry-based learning practices are an ideal instructional tool for student-centered learning. Inquiry promotes student curiosity, ownership of learning, active participation, and varied assessments to check students' understanding and growth of knowledge and skills. Lastly, student-centered learning considers the diverse makeup of the classroom and honors student voices and multiple perspectives.

We have moved from teacher centric methods to learner centric methods to presently learning centric methods. This implies identification of learning styles of the students and customizing the teaching accordingly. The curriculum design has to be in such a way as to foster critical thinking and creativity among students. It is also very important to design or craft the assessments with the objective of honing these skills.

The major key-point while working on student-centered curriculum design is to align the goal of your curriculum with the student needs. For this you can start with defining what students should know or be able to do by the end of the course or program. Then try understanding students’ expectations as an outcome from the program. It is important for the educator to work on the needs of the student. This will help you to understand the mindset of your target students. These outcomes will guide you to design the curriculum of your program and provide a framework for assessment.

Spiral, sequential and based on retrieval practice of core knowledge and transferable skills that are required in the exam years. E.g. if map reading is a skill required in Y11, then feed these transferable skills lower down the school into their curriculum.

One model for allowing students to have voice and voice is PBL. When implementing PBL, teachers must stay clear of influencing student ideas and simply serve as a guide on the side. Teachers who tend to be more traditional in their approach may struggle allowing student voice but once they walk through the process they will see the benefit and wish they had been exposed earlier.

Involving students in the process goes a long way in making to actively engaged, interested and motivated in the learning process. Also, it helps educators to recognize the learners' strengths and weaknesses which will inform what type of teaching strategies to use to meet learners' needs.

As the name indicates student-centered curriculum it is important to involve the student while designing the curriculum. If possible you can involve students in decision-making processes about the curriculum. You can ask students about their needs and studying techniques that they are comfortable with so that you can design accordingly. You can take references from the students while designing learning activities. This will help you in designing your curriculum in a better way and also your students will have the feeling of getting involved.

Students learn effectively when they take ownership of their learning and are actively involved in this process. This will improve overall outcomes and quality of instruction.

Engaging the learners in the defined course coverage with the desired outcome is another important task that will help decide the aptness of the course. This also reflects for any future amendments in the designed course.

All learners/students are of different learning levels and their learning styles must be different. Appropriate delivery styles must be incorporated while designing the instructions.

While designing a student-centered curriculum we should keep in mind that every student has different learning styles. So try to work and add different learning styles so that you can reach more students. For this you can incorporate a variety of the teaching methods such as lectures, group work, hands-on activities. Also never forget to provide students materials such as textbooks, online resources for self study. If possible try to give real-world examples because it is easy to understand from real-world examples. After-all the end goal is to give best education courses to the student.

Understanding the needs of your learners helps you to identify the best approach to use, whether it be using different modes of instruction or simply adding to what you are currently doing. You know your students best. What motivates them? How do you include all learners in your planning? Step out of your comfort zone, include images, movements, technology. Seek out colleagues with expertise in these areas or simply ask for support. How then can students show you what they know using a variety of strategies. Help them gain confidence by giving them options. How can you include these things without adding more work to your plate?

Absolutely. Collaboration and interaction are very key. Peer-to-peer learning in group work and projects opens up students with lower capacity to learn by seeing and doing. They are also a bit more confident to ask question in the less formal peer group.

The power of collaboration and team work can never be overemphasized. Learners are able to share experiences, knowledge and ideas together. This helps to promote great critical reasoning skills in learners. In the long run, we begin to have learners who ask a more higher-order questions (Bloom Taxonomy).

Give a chance to the learners to interact and collaborate as by doing so they will enhance their peer learning capabilities. Learning by doing, the 'I do you see' approach is also a good way to have in such an environment.

To have a student-centered curriculum is understood to be relevant, responsive and adaptable to differentiate. Anything less would not be student-centered. Students are not monolithic in their learning capability. More and more research has been affirming learning variability among students. A student-centered curriculum advocates for students owning their own learning and being able to process monitor their individual learning pathway.

Designing a student-centric curriculum helps to facilitate the adaptation and differentiation of learning resources, strategies and methodologies to suit diverse learner's needs and styles. Also, it helps in ensuring that there is updates on the changing educational trends as curriculum will be adjusted to suit this. This makes more reliable, innovate and result-oriented.

In today’s learning environment, this is pivotal. Our school system has seen an increase in multilingual learners and sped students. We also are seeing an increase with neurodivergent learning.

As already mentioned many times, there is no one size fits approach while delivering content to masses. The instructor/teacher must have the openness to adapt to changes wherever required. By change, I meant the pedagogical approach.

Indeed understanding their background and their learning is important as that will help you to draw the curriculum in a more effective manner. This is called something understanding the dynamics of your audience and their persona.

Firstly you’ll know if your curriculum is working by seeing fewer gaps in knowledge as the students progress through the school. But to reflect on anonymous student surveys is key if you want to gauge how appealing the content is to your student population. This can be key in an international market when traditional British case studies may have no reference to students that may have never visited the UK.

In my context where decolonization of education is a focus - reflection and improvement principle holds more value than any other principle. Research has proven that the more things change the more they stay the same- however every innovation can be improved.

Two things come to mind or are worth repeating. Teachers must perform as a “guide on the side rather than a sage on the stage.” Moreover, we must remember that often times, “students don’t care what you know until they know that you care.” Finally, the curriculum should be adapted to the “real world” as much as possible rather than appear to be esoteric meanderings.
