What are the most common AI deadline challenges and how can you overcome them?

To counter this, setting realistic target thresholds or time bounds is essential. Once these predefined success metrics are surpassed, we must be ready to consider the project complete. This disciplined approach ensures that the project remains focused and viable, averting the risk of getting lost in the vast sea of potential improvements that AI projects inherently present.

There are new ideas, and white space opportunities so it can lead to unrealistic expectations. The key is aligning on the end goal before starting any project. Spanners do come alive but it's important to have a robust change management system, tracking system and a clear RACI model ( responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed) Ensure only those who are responsible for output and direction are taking the final call on the output and its success.

The usage of PII in AI training, for instance, raises significant concerns about privacy breaches and the inadvertent revelation of sensitive information. Additionally, AI platforms face unique threats like adversarial attacks, which can manipulate data inputs to produce incorrect or misleading outputs, and even extract trained AI Data, as we have seen recently has happened even to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

The success of your AI project depends majorly on the data. But in some of the projects I have noticed data issues particularly challenging its quality and sources. The data issues in AI projects can be managed in 3 steps: 1] Data assessment and cleaning: In this step, I focus on ensuring quality of the data and identifying missing values, inconsistencies, and outliers either by correcting them or removing them if they are errors. 2] Data Augmentation: You can use techniques like oversampling, undersampling to balance and enrich your dataset. Alternatively, use advanced methods like SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique) 3] Monitoring and Updating: Continuously monitor the performance of your AI model and update as needed.

You have to balance your work with other commitments, such as teaching, studying, or personal life. You have to prioritize your tasks, delegate when possible, and seek help when needed. You can use tools like Microsoft Project or Trello to manage your projects and collaborate with your team members.

AI could recognise faces but it still cant recognise faces. That is the biggest story for me that drives home this point. While it can recognise that there is a Face in the image, it cant match faces to people in its database as efficiently. Complexity can easily be under-estimated.

This is in fact crucial for developing any AI algorithm/app, as we won't be able to build big things on our own. Team skill identification, task & workload management, and uncertainty management needs to be calculated well. A good team leader will consider its colleagues as part of his body, if some parts are big, give them heavier things and vice versa. And be prepared to shuffle/distribute/even do things on your own in case things are delayed, and consult it to your management in case that unexpected scenario occurs, and don't hold things back. Remember: communication is key!

Most tech skills require you to find out the right stack overflow thread. Cutting-edge development is different. It requires you to break the problem down into smaller pieces and then look for analogous answers.

It’s about building trust and keeping everyone on the same journey.

Whether the blindspots and feedback loops of the algorithms are taken care of correctly or not, one of the significant concerns we see with any AI project is the source of data you are working with and what it will bring out.

Being upfront about forecasted risks, disclosing known unknowns, and providing for unknown unknowns is a worthy approach that can come in handy later.

There are so many new shiny objects, but we must define the ROI with the current technology and capability. If the ROI meets or exceeds expectations, build the solution with flexibility for new enhancements, but build the solution now so your client can start getting value immediately.

AI projects can feel like a walk in a foggy forest, where paths keep changing. I recall a project riddled with unexpected regulatory changes. The lifesaver? A dynamic risk management strategy. Identify potential risks early, keep contingency plans handy, and be ready to pivot. Flexibility and foresight are your torchlights in the fog of uncertainty.

My recommendations & learnt lessons from AI initiatives; 1. Avoid Big Bang approach of trying to build something monolithic & losing track of the objectives & timelines. Rather, set smaller & incremental goals for a robust foundational setup & then scale fast. 2. Early feedback: do not work in isolation for many months to later realize what you built is off track what is expected. Have a regular cadence with key stakeholders, meet and review, share feedback, align and plan the next steps. 3. Find a mentor / partner who potentially has had prior experience of walking down the path. This will not only help with an unbiased view but also save precious time of having to reinvent something that can be borrowed as an accelerator.

A half-baked model will fail more than 50% of the time. Knowing this is easy. Explaining this is slightly hard. Acting on it is much harder.

The most funniest deadlines are to train people forcefully in this skill (specially the Gen AI :-)). With the latest developments, everyone is racing ahead to be the first. It's time we realise that not every development can pickup the AI skills overnight. It comes with it's own requirements and base skills in aptitude, analysis, data and statistics. Possibly everyone can code a webapp with latest tools and frameworks but expecting the same lot to start building and training LLMs overnight is going build an inefficient workforce. The need is to define a learning path in today's organisations, select the first few batches carefully and then scale to meet the self inflicted deadlines to build a AI workforce.
