Talk to your market. Pick up the phone and have conversations. And then collect the data. If you’re able to, record and transcribe the conversations. It’s important to know what language your market uses. How they describe their problems and potential solutions.

There are an abundance of ways to research your audience in social and it often involves free discourse. One of my first stops is Reddit which is essentially a focus group in a forum environment. Search the topic/product you need insight on and see how people talk about it, their pain points, competitors they mention. FB Groups or interest-based servers on Discord are helpful too and can give you a fly-on-the-wall look into how people talk about your category or market. Both of these can unlock messaging or product opportunities and give you robust information on how your audience feels, thinks, behaves, and desires. Lastly, a quick survey amplified on your network can do wonders at filling in the information gaps.

Social media is a valuable tool for understanding your audience's interactions with your brand and competitors. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit offer diverse features for research, feedback, and engagement, so select the ones that align with your goals and audience.

Finally, search data can be incredible at being more laser focused on what people want to know, do, buy, etc. And many of those tools are pretty inexpensive too. What’s probably most difficult is how to make sense of the data, so you probably need an expert for that!

And it can help keep your company customer-centric when expanding into new markets.

Third party tools are going to help you in a limited manner, while you role-playing the critic will learn quite a few things along the way!

The easiest and most cost-effective thing to do is to literally become the audience. Yes, role-play in the real world. Launching a new car soon? Go online and go through the steps to buy it - do the research, compare it with competitors, convince yourself this is the best car for you (then ask yourself why). Ask your friends about the car. Visit the showroom and pretend you want to buy it. Test drive it. Go over the financing plan, and tell them you'll get back to them in a few days. Talk to owners, join an FB group or whatever. Go through the entire consumer journey so you can uncover all of the hidden truths. You'll learn things you'd never imagine. And have fun.

Sure, crawl the oblig communities on socials... but then get offline and get into the real world. I still think one of the most creative ways you can understand more about an audience is by going to an event they'll be at (a car show, a hip-hop concert, a country music festival, a stand-up comedy gig, a protest, whatever) and immersing yourself in the crowd. People-watch, eavesdrop, introduce yourself. The conversations you'll have in line at the bar, in the bathrooms, in the crowd, before, during and after the event will provide you with an ocean of insights. It's not always feasible but when it is, it's a goldmine. Plus, a few gig tickets are cheaper than a focus group, the people are off guard and actually real, and it's way more fun.

Online forum conversations are typically unfiltered, providing a raw and unedited view of your audience's opinions and experiences. I would use AI to generate simulated test results. Just write a prompt that makes GPT act as a client or targetaudience. Very easy to scale and to get a grasp of any target audiences ideas.
