What are the most effective research methods for promoting social justice in your field?

Ethnographic research methods work very aptly to get significant data from your participants . Ethnography enables the researcher to get to know participants in their space of work. Their interactions networking and collaboration gives the researcher impetus to get rich data that can be utilised in formulating closing statements. Social justice can only become identified if the researcher can function from within the participants in their setting .

I will prefer and always go in fo Action Research! To me, the most effective research methods for promoting social justice action research. Action research encapsulates collaborative and democratic approach that involves the people who are affected by the research problem as co-researchers and co-creators of knowledge and action. Throughout the research, the researchers solves the problem on the way and asses the impacts as well by pre testing, testing and post testing. Participants and empowered to challenge the existing power structures, and generate positive social change.

Spending time with those who have lived experience of homelessness , mental health issues or any other field of human endeavour is essential . Whilst I recognize the usefulness of certain academic studies , research papers and such , I am painfully aware of the biases that can creep into social justice areas . Engaging with those who have lived experience takes time , relationship building and trust . Our own biases may be our greatest threat to an understanding of another's reality. I always ask myself , what am I trying to achieve in any given situation. Will it be of actual benefit to others ? What choices and options have been explored ? Who will benefit ?

Intersectional analysis is an example of a framework for understanding how various social identities intersect and interact to shape an individual's or a group's experiences and opportunities within society. Kimberlé Crenshaw, a legal academic in the late 1980s conceived the term which has evolved in to a critical concept in such fields as sociology, gender studies, and critical race theory. Intersectionality recognizes that people possess multiple social identities, including but not limited to race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and more - these identities don't exist in isolation but rather intersect and influence each other.

Participatory Action Research (PAR) is one of the most famous research methods for promoting social justice. This method sees the research population not only as subjects but as actors. The researcher needs to build trust, and acceptance, and incite population ownership. The key word is "respect" keeping in mind that our knowledge is not better than theirs, our approach to resolving the identified issue is not necessarily the best. PAR has been efficiently used in many studies with indigenous, or vulnerable populations. It gives a result in the image of the local and cultural context.

Mixed Methods Research methods allow the researcher to get the whole story. It is the method to use while approaching complex social problems. Looking at multiple aspects in different ways creates a piece of comprehension. They are widely used in project impact evaluations. There are some metrics and quantitative elements we will question but the only way to answer the "how" is by using qualitative approaches. e.g. How the project has been adopted by the beneficiaries?

Transformative Research reminds me of a social justice principle that "designs for the most marginalized" if we are to achieve equity. I think with research in general, we need to be intentional with whose voices are we hearing from, repeatedly? Even amongst the marginalized groups, there is so much intersectionality at play that needs to be considered. For example, as I began my journey to learn more about the disability communities here in Cambodia, I intentionally sought out mothers with disabilities from low income families whose compounded marginalization experiences can offer extremely useful nuances for the said social justice works we're "trying" to achieve.

For me transformative research and social justice work hand-in-hand. The principle is conducting research-as-change, not just research for change. I combine tramsformative paradigm with participatory visual methods that allow community members to authentically engage and own their knowledge and power. Often marginalized communities do not need to be 'given' voice, they need a platform to be seen and heard.

To me, transformative research is crucial for several reasons. It drives innovation, offering new solutions to complex problems. It has a global impact, aligning with my desire to create a better world. Additionally, it fosters personal growth, encouraging critical thinking and adaptability. For instance, in the GovTech field, transformative research can lead to the development of efficient, citizen-centric platforms that revolutionize public service delivery. This showcases the tangible benefits of such research, further fueling my interest in it!

The aim of transformative research should be to achieve deliberate, continuous and anticipatory objectives; It should use in-depth, broad-scoped and rapidly implementable incremental approach seizing opportunities as they arise to minimize trade-offs and maximise sysnergy; Participants learn, re-frame and explore future creating demand for transformation including structural changes in the system as TR is supposed to be systems based.

Finally another important choosing a theory that speaks to experiential disparities will help to crystalize your particular approach to exploration of such experiences.

This may be an obvious one, but it's important to create/work with research teams whose members are representative of the populations/communities in the research itself. To promote social justice through research, not only should communities be involved in research, but there should be members of the research team from those communities as well, including the publication process.

Candidly, I find this article is confounding paradigms, study design, methods, and I guess for lack of a better term “sharing of results.” You can approach research from a lens of supporting social justice, you can design a study in a way that supports social justice, you can choose methods that support social justice, and you can share results in ways that support social justice. Personally, I would suggest you start with your research questions and choose an approach that best allows you to answer them. No matter what approach you take (design, methods, etc), you can be intentional about promoting social justice — engaging others in meaningful ways, reflecting on your own biases, and sharing results in a way that is beneficial to others.

Qualitative research methods (interviews, focus group discussions, ethnographic observations). These allow the researcher to not only observe participants in their natural environment but to also be able to ask open ended questions and probe which allows people to tell their stories and lived experiences and what they are sharing means to them. It is also important to speak the language of the participants so that they are able to express themselves freely and for the researcher to ask for the underlying meaning of some of the issues they talk about. This provides rich data.

In these challenging times, research remains crucial, but it's the implementation that truly takes the center stage for me. We're facing a crisis of implementation across various sectors, and this has elevated its importance. Research generates valuable insights and solutions, but without effective implementation, these findings often remain untapped potential. It's in the practical application of research that we can address the pressing issues of our time, from healthcare crises to environmental challenges. Implementation is the bridge between knowledge and action. For me, it's where we transform theory into real-world impact. In a world that urgently needs solutions, the focus on implementation is paramount!!
