In today’s age, technology has opened our eyes to a broader competitive landscape. This is why I feel seeking diverse perspectives is key. When a business owner does this, it allows for more exposure to the way of doing things, could spark some ideas to help differentiate what they are doing, create stretch goals, and even open a door to an emerging market. Having a diverse perspective and mindset can create endless opportunities.

As someone who's served as both a mentor and a mentee, I have found it incredibly important to think of the mutual benefits – the benefits are not just one-sided. Also, set clear expectations and be proactive in any mentor-mentee relationship. Understanding and valuing what both individuals bring to the interactions helps create an open, engaging environment. Additionally, as a mentee, be focused and invested in the process. You will get out what you put in!

There are two parts to extracting maximum benefit from mentorship. One, finding the right mentor/program catering to one's goals and needs by checking out the surrounding ecosystem both in person and on social, consistently networking to find the right organizations or individuals with industry expertise that one is looking for. Second, create an ongoing relationship with the mentor to derive maximum value. Often, it is seen that after an amazing first meeting with a mentor, individuals shy away from reaching out again from fear of judgement on their progress. Don't wait for perfecting your plan/idea before sharing it with a mentor. Make your mentor a friend and a brainstorming partner in your entrepreneurial journey!

Mentorship provides new challenging goals and accountability when your up. When your down, mentors supply the belief that you will achieve your goals and remind you why you started your business in the first place.

Working with diverse clients across 17 industries we've seen a broad range of objectives, but also in clarity of objectives. Yes, if you have a clear objective of growth in your business, or an ideal of the challenges you would like to remove, then we can tackle those right away. The most valuable lesson I've learned from my mentors is the significance of giving back. They taught me that what you give is what you receive. My success is rooted in my authentic commitment to giving back and assisting others. Presently, I serve on the Board of Directors for ACSP, the trade association for our industry. I invest my time and dedication into strengthening this association for the upcoming generation of professionals. I've spent countless hours on the phone, connecting with, guiding, and supporting others. I do this because I vividly recall a time when I needed help and struggled to find someone who could provide it.

Giving back is one of the most important parts of the mentorship process. Whether you have benefitted from a mentor (or wish you had), you can be that change and offer guidance to someone else. I have happily provided time and guidance to students considering entering the legal field, to young lawyers just entering the profession, and to new business owners who are navigating seemingly insurmountable challenges for the first time. We all benefit when someone else succeeds. Be that light for someone else, if and where you can.

Don't expect your mentor to take the place of your own hard work and don't expect magic. Lastly, and on the other hand, do not overlook advice just because you think your business is "different" or the person giving advice doesn't "get it." No one has a crystal ball or a magic 8 ball in business. The way to find answers is measuring results against your strategy, your logistics, your assumptions. What are the trends? What is the info showing me as a way forward? Seek advice from mentors on what the info means, on how to seek better info, on how to learn from it. Don't expect your mentor to tell you "if you do this, you'll be successful." No one will ever know your business like you so put in the hard work.

Look outside the norm. Gaining mentorship from someone outside your industry can help to provide fresh perspective on solving business challenges without the bias we all have around the industry we are engulfed in.
