Soliciting feedback from others has always been a humbling experience for me. I always seek feedback from my participants at the end of a session that I facilitate. I use the Design Thinking feedback model and ask for I wish... and I like... This is a very effective and positive way to seek a feedback.

Challenging your assumptions when showing empathy is like cleaning your glasses before looking at a painting. You think you know what you're seeing, but wipe those lenses and see! - whole new picture. We all walk around with our own invisible backpack of experiences, beliefs, and biases. When we try to empathize, sometimes we accidentally pull stuff out of our own backpack instead of really seeing what's in theirs. So, the trick is to catch yourself. Ask yourself, "Wait, am I really getting their story, or am I just seeing what I expect to see?" It's like being a detective, but for feelings. You're looking for clues, asking questions, and most importantly, being open to answers that might surprise you.

I had the opportunity to work with a stakeholder from a different geography. Always he used to ask me a number of questions regarding my training plan. Being a very creative and expressive person I was very uncomfortable with these questions as I doubted that he did not trust me enough. Slowly I tried to also find out the reason behind those questions. To my surprise I discovered that unlike me he had a very analytical style and he had a strong need to understand the rationale behind certain actions which were trivia to be as my social style was different. This discovery helped me to flex and have better interactions.

Actions speak louder than words. Look for opportunities to serve the people on your team in tangible ways. Maybe someone is raising money for a cancer walk to support a family member. Showing up to walk can be even more meaningful than writing a check. Several years ago, a young mom came back to the office after picking up kids from school. She had an urgent deadline and no evening childcare. A manager -- someone senior to this employee -- entertained the kids so the mom could finish her project. Get creative. If you hear an employee's car is in the shop, consider offering a ride home. Make a meal for an employee who isn't feeling well. Stay in touch with team members. Learn the challenges they are facing and offer practical support.

Take action based on what you learn about others' needs and concerns. Follow up on discussions, show that you remember important details about people, and make adjustments to support others better.

Empathy is based on the ability to Connect with people. Asking a lot of questions to gain understanding and sharing that you care about people helps build relationships based on genuine connection. One of my favorite questions is usually "Tell me more in detail...." which let's a person be able to sit back and listen. Relationships that are successful and healthy are based on Connection.

If one isn't interested in nor has a healthy amount of respect for others, they tend not to care to engage in the authentic behaviors previously mentioned. By integrating these unconventional strategies into your leadership development, I believe, you can deepen your capacity for empathy and forge stronger connections with your team members.

Care for your reports, trust them and make sure they understand the important things in life. Family is super important and reminding them not to miss events that once missed cannot be relived. By caring for their well being you connect with them on a different level.

Leadership with empathy means being humane in most stressful and difficult times. More so with self ,unless a leader has self empathy or is self aware being empathetic becomes difficult. He/she will not realize the unconscious biases creeping in all key decisions.

For a leader to develop empathy, they need to work on two levels: PERSONAL and SOCIAL PERSONAL LEVEL • Develop a habit of listening to different perspectives. • Be soft on people, hard on problem. • Provide some silent thinking time when emotions run high. • Practice reflective listening. SOCIAL LEVEL • Watch for signs of burnout in others. • Show genuine interest in the wishes, faiths, and dreams of other people. • Exhibit an inclination to help an employee with personal problems. • Show compassion when other people disclose a personal loss.
