Yes, One thing I have found helpful in Indonesia is to listen to operators in the markets you want to get active in, without making any assumptions about it, even though those assumptions are based on a market close by.

As the leader of a leading smartphone brand operating at a high level in the Asia Pacific region 2005-2013 + a volunteer exec with Chambers of Commerce, I would highlight for those interested in expanding their business in Asia Pacific that “what works in Denver doesn’t always work in Delhi”. In other words, recognize that markets are different and it is important to pay special attention to the needs, interests and aspirations of the local markets in which you operate. To paint Asia Pacific with a broad brush would also be a mistake; those who spend the time understanding local markets (even as global companies) are better positioned to succeed.

I faced significant challenges when I held a global role for a large corporation with regional and local teams asserting their uniqueness and claiming that global strategies and initiatives do not apply to them. Indeed, there are vital differences in markets, regulations, macroeconomic factors, politics and even local systems. Nonetheless, to operate effectively, it's crucial to shape your plan to be flexible and scalable on a global scale, accommodating local adaptations while still aiming for the central goal. Achieving this balance is challenging, but it is possible by establishing strong relationships, building rapport and staying close to the market while driving open discussions that generate valuable ideas and foster collaboration.

Diversity is a source of competitive advantage and innovation for strategic leaders who can leverage it effectively. Diversity refers to the variety of backgrounds, experiences, skills, perspectives, and ideas that exist within and across teams, functions, and regions. Imagine establishing one of the most diverse and dynamic organizations in Asia Pacific. After an initial effort to establish the smartphone brand, we quickly realized that it was important to act local while thinking global. Typically, smartphone / CE brands would hire folks from within the industry; essentially copying approaches or as they say in the telco/smartphone business … it is an “incestuous” industry. This industry dynamic didn’t lead to growth nor success. Reshaping a team with folks from Argentina, NZ, Australia, Vietnam, Malaysia, the UK, US, Canada, Singapore and points in between with a variety in experience, background, education, etc made the difference and the business (the team too) flourished.

Networks are essential for strategic leaders who want to balance local and global perspectives. Networks are the relationships and connections that strategic leaders establish and maintain with internal and external stakeholders, such as peers, subordinates, superiors, customers, suppliers, competitors, and influencers. By building networks, strategic leaders can access and share information, resources, and support, as well as influence and mobilize others towards their goals. To build networks, strategic leaders need to communicate effectively, build trust and rapport, and offer value and reciprocity.

4 Embrace paradox

Paradox is the tension that arises from the simultaneous existence of contradictory or incompatible elements, such as standardization and customization, centralization and decentralization, or autonomy and control. Strategic leaders who want to balance local and global perspectives need to embrace paradox, rather than avoid or resolve it. By embracing paradox, strategic leaders can recognize and exploit the opportunities and challenges that arise from the complexity and diversity of the global business environment. To embrace paradox, strategic leaders need to develop a flexible and integrative mindset, where they can balance multiple perspectives and trade-offs, and adopt both/and rather than either/or thinking.

Learning is the key to balancing local and global perspectives for strategic leaders who want to stay relevant and competitive in a dynamic and uncertain world. Learning is the process of acquiring, applying, and updating knowledge, skills, and attitudes, based on feedback and reflection.
