Ultimately, the consumer's demand decides the inclination towards certain products. Accordingly, Academia & industrial R&D follow the path to bring something novel and sometimes cost effective. These ongoing activities are usually discussed in the events mentioned above. Hence, being a part of these scientific events is must to have a direct followup with change and update in the trends for R&D.

All of the above points are good, but either they assume or miss a key point. R&D is not a stand-alone organization nor are they responsible for company strategy. What do I mean? Like any group that needs money and people within a company they also have to justify that funding. They should have a long-term, mid-term as well as immediate strategy with product development projects linked. These projects should be rated and funded based upon some KPI's such as: realistic time to market, market readiness for the product along with a running ROI. The strategy should stretch to 15 or 20yrs and account for technology trends and changes. Projects need to be risk rated and via a perpetual review the projects can be added or deleted.

Never follow the mainstream trends as they are already behind. Use tools to take a multidimensional deep dive into spaces that are just emerging at the forefront of ideas. Explore how you can link these together (through research) to create something that is entirely new.
