Your team is cutting corners on asset integrity. How can you ensure the quality of oil and gas projects?

Keep people focused on two things: 1. The overall objectives of the company, and how their project fits into these objectives. 2. Non negotiable risks which the company simply is not willing to take.

As a Rope Access Field Supervisor I feel that it is imperative to project success that the crew not only be familiar with the standards to which the code expects the work be performed; but also the standards that I EXPECT of them to adhere to as a crew. Even if that 1 CML will take a little extra elbow grease to achieve safely and accurately, even if that haul requires we reassess and re-engage utilizing an alternative rigging method, even if we have to cycle through every individual on the crew to achieve success; we do what it takes and share the load to go home with our heads held high knowing we completed our job task with honor and integrity! QUALITY above QUANTITY ALWAYS! Safe is slow; Slow is smooth; Smooth is fast.

Audits are an important step, but also a delicate balancing act. You want your team to view audits as a normal part of learning. Fresh sets of eyes to HELP make the project better, not a policeman coming to levy a fine. As such the training of auditors on how to interact and coach is paramount of making the audit process a positive part of the growth and learning of any team.

Training is one part of it, but motivation and alignment are even more important. People need to understand WHY they are working on a project, WHY the project exists in the first place and how the project fits into the greater reason for existence of the company. Accidents normally occur at two ends of the spectrum - undertrained, new employees and very seasoned staff who have become complacent. Motivation is the often overlooked part of proactive incident avoidance.

In my view and experience, continuous and timely training is essential for executing activities related to oilfield operations, especially when implementing shortcuts to reduce completion times, while ensuring asset quality and efficiency. Keeping personnel up to date on the latest safety technologies and procedures is crucial. Regular training sessions during operations will help prevent issues and/or mitigate them as needed. The training plan should be audited by safety personnel and technical/operational experts to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.

Framing goals effectively to always understand that we can always do better, keep learning as a team, growing and improving is an integral part of continuous improvement. If the end goal is not framed well, you risk either setting unachievable goals, or lowering performance as goals are met. A goal of reaching XX results, is not the same as a certain % improvement every year, or even better, a benchmark that evolves and becomes more stringent as the standards in the industry or the company continue to improve.
