There is no denying that targeted trainings are beneficial. My advice to leaders of people is to look at this situation over a horizon of few months and possibly over quarters. 1. Define your goals based on the organisational priorities. Find ways to integrate the organisational vision into the work you and your team does. 2. Establish strong connection to the work your team does that impacts the success of the organization. This helps in gaining their alignment. Often times, people don’t relate to what they’re doing to why they’re doing. 3. Lastly, people tend to over focus on root cause and addressing them. Which isn’t bad at all. I find it powerful when coupled with helping team members identify their potential. A sustainable way IMO.

To better understand the challenges faced by a team, I have found it helpful to first gather feedback from team members who are on the front lines every day. What barriers do they perceive as hindering their success? Are these barriers related to systemic issues, skill sets, training deficits, or low morale? After collecting and reviewing team responses for trends, a plan can be formulated to address the identified issues.

Why do we assume that its a gap in the people’s skill in hitting targets? It maybe a gap in the programs needed or a key item for the field people to use to bridge the gap… best to do a full analysis why there is a gap in the first place and work on filling these gaps

Targeted training can improve performance if skill or knowledge gaps are the issue. First, identify root causes, including skill deficiencies, unclear goals, or external barriers. If training is appropriate, tailor content to specific needs, use practical applications, and measure effectiveness. Also, consider alternatives like improving workflows, leadership support, or employee motivation. A holistic approach ensures sustainable performance improvement.

If the entire team is encountering issues, revisit the targets. Did the people doing the work provide input, or were they decided without feedback? Are the targets realistic and achievable based on the team’s tools, capacity, and time? Evaluate this first to determine whether the root cause of the challenges are tied to target setting.
