According to me, based on the real-time projects what I work, the benefits from cloud computing from business standpoint - CAPEX to OPEX - Automated processes and self-service tools streamline operations and reduce manual labor - Access to advanced tools and technologies enhances productivity and innovation - Cloud-based backups and replication ensure data protection and quick recovery in case of disasters - Access to cutting-edge technologies and platforms drives innovation and differentiation - Access to data and tools from anywhere, at any time - Cloud-based applications and services enable seamless customer interactions - Virtualization and energy-efficient technologies contribute to environmental sustainability.

Cloud computing gives you access to services and capacities you don't have on-premises. The scalability as well as the ability to create resources on-demand is definitely what drives companies to the cloud.

Cloud computing allows organizations to pay for computing resources on a pay-as-you-go basis, reducing the need for upfront capital investment. Cloud services provide the ability to scale resources up or down based on demand. Cloud services can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Cloud providers manage the underlying infrastructure, allowing organizations to focus on developing and deploying applications rather than managing hardware and software updates. Cloud computing enables rapid deployment of applications and services. Cloud providers typically offer high levels of reliability and redundancy. Data is often replicated across multiple data centers, reducing the risk of data loss due to hardware failures.

1 - Security concerns remain one of the primary challenges of cloud computing. 2 - Organizations operating in regulated industries or handling sensitive data must comply with various data privacy laws and regulations, such as GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA. 3 - While cloud providers offer high availability and reliability guarantees, cloud services can still experience outages and downtime, impacting business operations and customer experience. 4 - Dependence on a single cloud provider can lead to vendor lock-in, limiting flexibility and making it difficult to migrate between cloud platforms or negotiate better terms.

It is hard to navigate at first into all these services and choice of capacities. There is a learning curve to go through first to get all benefits from the cloud. You'll have to get familiar with the basics concepts and tools that will allow you to plan carefully your move to cloud computing.

In my opinion, most of the IT careers are somehow related to cloud computing. Besides what was already shared, I have seen a huge increase on data engineering and data science opportunities, besides Artificial Intelligence opportunities. Even if you don't plan to follow that path, I highly recommend at least some basic knowledge on those areas.

The cloud environment being complex with all its services, there is a need of skilled people to work in it. Also more and more companies are moving to the cloud (most of the time in hybrid mode) so they also need skilled people to accompany them. There is then a rising need for expert in cloud computing and any person working in IT will be exposed to it. So even if you are not looking at a full career in the cloud, learning the basics is recommended.

If you are an IT professional or a computer scientist, you already have some knowledge about computing. This knowledge is transferrable to the cloud (like a migration from on-premises to the cloud!). You will of course have to learn technical specificities that applies to the cloud only, but this knowledge will stack up with your legacy one, not replace it. You'll understand the new possibilities offered by cloud computing and be ready to transition.

Transitioning to a career in cloud computing can be daunting, but seeking mentorship and guidance can greatly ease the process. Look for experienced professionals in the field who can offer insights, advice, and support as you navigate your career transition. Join networking groups, attend industry events, and reach out to professionals on platforms like LinkedIn to find potential mentors. Engage in informational interviews to learn more about different cloud roles, career paths, and opportunities.

Cloud computing is a fast moving field and you'll need to be flexible and willing to learn every day. The volume of knowledge is huge and updates are frequent so it could be challenging. But if you don't like to be stuck in a niche and like to explore and learn, then cloud computing should be for you.
