REAL FACTS: If you DON'T start your job search out focused from the start it is going to be HARD. Be smart. Know your goals. Know what jobs you are aiming for- the entire realm from A-Z. BUILD 1 single resume that is hyper-focused on those common denominators these companies are looking for. Tweak small bits- like a phrase or 2 before you apply. That's it. Don't go crazy rewriting resumes for each job - EVEN if they are different industries or roles. I promise you if you start with a comprehensive resume you will do great. You can't change your background - but it can be developed from the ground up for your job search from the start. Be smart.

Reflect on your career and highlight achievements that match the skills required for the position, ensuring they are prominently featured in your resume. Be sure to share how your contributions can move the organization closer to its goals. This is not a time to hold back.

There's a 3-step system that I use in order to quickly customize resumes. I actually give it away for free on my FREE consultations. Basically, the first step is identifying the positions that you are ACTUALLY qualified for. Second, break down the job description using the proper tools (this should take just seconds if done correctly) generating a list of the top 10 responsibilities and qualifications as well as top 20 keywords/skills from the job description. The last step is to simply address each of these responsibilities and skills in your resume without copying and pasting from the job description. There are formulas I use in order to personalize each of the responsibility bullets in just seconds without being misleading.

Recognize that every job posting is a statement of need from an employer. In your bullet statements, make sure you are demonstrating relevant skills AND relevant results. For example, if the job description calls for the management and analysis of large amounts of data, don't just say "Analyzed large data sets utilizing Excel." Instead, add in those specifics that get you noticed like : "Analyzed a 6000 data point project using Excel to identify, extract, and visualize trends that was used to (improve efficiency in, refine an x process, identify new opportunities in, etc.)" - If you tailor this to your industry, the relevant results show you bring immediate value.

It's useful to read job adverts of different roles that you are looking to move into, and reading the LinkedIn profiles of Top experts in that industry and role. As you go through look out for any key skills and words/phrases that are linked to that position and adjust your CV accordingly, making sure you are highlighting those points and they stand out on your CV. For example if you are a strong and confident communicator and are highly analytical and brilliant at translating data into useful business insights, if you were applying for a Data Analysis role your CV would emphasise more on the analytical side of your skillset.

Ideally you should list your skills and achievements in bullet format. Determine which skills from the job description best match the metrics/examples you listed as your selected achievements. Any chance you have to use some of the company's lingo, or get as close as possible to the achievements and skills required, the better! Show them exactly how they are going to benefit from you working at their company and be specific- think about people affected, time savings, cost savings, or revenue generation. If you don't know the numbers, find them out or estimate them conservatively.

Script for an effective summary section: "[Description of current role] with [high-level summary of experience]. Demonstrated expertise in [three core competencies required by specific role]." Example: "Transactional lawyer with 10 years' experience in complex cross-border and domestic M&A transactions, including in the consumer products sector. Demonstrated expertise in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating M&A agreements, including purchase agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and shareholders' agreements."

Your summary should quickly capture the reader's attention, sell yourself and make them think this is the person we’re looking for. Use the terminology of the job where relevant. Include some/all of the following: what you do, industries you’ve worked in, years of experience, strength/ what makes you unique, and what you’re looking for next.

A well-crafted summary should reflect the key skills and experiences relevant to the specific role you're applying for. Research the industry and job description, then align your summary to emphasize how your background and achievements meet their needs. This approach not only grabs the recruiter’s attention but also demonstrates your adaptability and understanding of the role. There are three things to put in your summary, 1. Your years of experience and what roles (and titles) are you expecting to get into 2. Which industriy(ies) you have worked with? 3. What are the different roles that you have worked in during your experience? Do not use lot of adjectives, etc. but be thorough and through the point.

Read the job post throughly to know how to best tailor your resume for this role. Imagine yourself in the shoes of the person who wrote the job description. As you dissect the it, focus on the recurring themes and keywords. What qualities and skills do they seem to focus on most? What specific experience do they seem to think is most critical to the role? By identifying these priorities, you can better align your resume to show how you meet their needs. This approach will demonstrate your attention to detail, showing that you both understand and match the qualities they're looking for in a candidate.

Firstly if you are an expert who has immersed themselves within a niche industry - Show that!! Add your industry specific key words, technical training or systems knowledge & really go in to detail. E.g. A strong BMS Service Engineer isn't as good as a Tridium bias (& N4 Certified) BMS Controls expert proficient with Service & project delivery (From inception to delivery including programming, graphics, Software & Engineering). Prospective hiring manages spend less than 1 minute on a resume - Get their attention quickly - it's critical. I would also highlight your proven success & achievements against something specific from the PD: E.g. If a requirement was 'P&L accountability' highlight the growth & exact $ value P&L figure etc.

The job description gives you the info you need to incorporate into your experience descriptions/bullet points. If the job description lists a skill, software, task, etc. that you have experience with - be sure that is noted in your resume. Make it obvious - connect the dots using the same language the employer uses. This means you don't have to list every responsibility you had a in role but instead include the information that shows how your current/past experience align with the position of interest.

Each experience give you more bonus if the employer is a professional, but you should be smart to stay below the overqualified level becouse you will be unpreffered for the job, I think you already knew the reason.

We often think that if it comes to us easily, it may not be that valuable. Wrong. Trust your colleagues. They can help you spot your added value for any team or organization. This exercise is especially useful in job interviews for people who have difficulty tooting their horns.

Ideally a job seeker would reach out to a potential employer prior to ever submitting his/her resume and ask some questions about the position that go beyond what is in the job posting. Gain some unique insights about the position, organization or expectations that would give the job seeker a competitive advantage over other candidates. For example, if a sales representative discovers through this process that multiple customers of the are also those that she/he has relationships with from prior positions this should be highlighted. This is what I consider a competitive advantage.
