This really is important - being operationally AI competent is important - because this allows you to effectively deploy and use AI technology now and remain capable of using it as it develops and become more capable. In my experience with AI projects, organizing team members into small Squads of 2-4 people is highly effective. Each Squad should specialize in a specific area and include members with varying expertise. The most experienced member is responsible for dividing the workload, taking on complex tasks and assigning simpler ones to juniors. This approach leverages senior members' strengths while providing learning opportunities for juniors. The best part is that every Squad member is working closely with each other, strengthening relations and making knowledge transfer much easier and more natural.

At Snowflake, every month, we invite an external speaker to the entire organization to share the latest research on a certain AI field. For example, I recall once we invited a Deepspeed researcher to share the best practices for doing RLHF via PPO. RLHF on Gen AI models is a strange field even to many veteran ML practitioners. This is a classic "you don't know what you don't know" type of situation. In this situation, there are so many devils in the details. And I found it incredibly efficient to invite someone with this expertise to shed light and help learners take the "shortcut"

Technology, AI is just a subset, keeps evolving. The challenge and fun of it is to keep up with all the innovation. To keep up with innovation, you need to assess what your goals are in learning something new with your employees. From there, building upon the first principles (basics) you'll be able to apply whatever shiny new tech coming out that is relevant to your use case. Once you have you have a solid learning strategy, you can easily find relevant resources to stay current. One of the best ways to learn something is to learn by doing. Build a small proof of concept to showcase the technology, that'll solidify your team's understanding and they can help communicate it to others.

During one project, we worked in Squads (refer to the contribution on "Collaborate Closely") and one team member improved their skills so rapidly that we created a new Squad with them as the leader. In every project, it’s essential to continuously monitor and reassess the relevance of your systems, divisions, and structures. Adapt and evolve to ensure they remain effective. Avoid categorizing people based on their current skills, as they can and do improve. Most importantly, do not fear change! Keep adapting and improving to ensure everyone can contribute effectively.

If AI is your mission statement, your sales pitch, I'd make sure everyone at least understands the basics of it and how you are presenting it. In house collaboration and inclusion will help build a strong team of people that feel like they are valued as well as helping them understand AI as you are presenting it.
